2 File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Copy files from one internet host (server) to your account on another host –Need domain name of the FTP server –Need a user account on the FTP server Username Password

3 File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Two types: –Command line FTP Host based Type commands at the prompt –FTP client GUI based (buttons, menus, etc.)

4 FTP servers Unix or Linux machines –Hierarchical directory structure –Navigate using commands FTP servers can allow guest accounts –Username: anonymous Password: e-mail address –Have a directory called pub (short for public), intended for users classified as others –Users can download files for free

5 File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Two Main File Types: –Text files: just text, ASCII –Binary files: sound, video, images

6 FTP Commands ftp domain name – connects to ftp server, get login screen. get filename – downloads a single file to the local directory. put filename – uploads a single file to the remote directory.
