3 Stamina and Health  We need an efficient cardio-respiratory system for every day life not just sport!  Heart disease is one of the biggest killers of adults in Britain. Coronary heart disease is a preventable disease that kills more than 110,000 people in UK every year. 275 people have heart attack each year.

4  Clear link between lifestyle factors and heart disease.  Cardiovascular inefficiency leads to feeling breathless, tired and inadequate. Research  How much physical activity does the British Heart Foundation recommend that adults should do?  What activities do they suggest?

5 Research  Use your books to find out about the NHS Health Survey for England  Page 7  Have a look at the graphs showing increasing levels of obesity on page 8.  Discuss with your partner

6 Diet Balanced Diet- All the necessary nutrients needed to enable you to sustain your lifestyle. This will vary at different stages of your life, gender, and amount of physical activity you do. Over consumption of fats and processed food in the western world has led to obesity and lack of exercise- heart disease.

7 Exercise Essential for maintenance of health and fitness British Heart Foundation suggest that if we do not participate in regular exercise we could be at risk of the following;  Reduced Aerobic Fitness  Reduced Flexibility  Reduced Strength  Body Composition

8 Children and Exercise  If children do not participate in exercise from an early age they will suffer from an array of ‘lifestyle’ disease in later life.  Research some of the British Heart Foundations and Department of Health's’ strategies to get children more active  Page 13 in your book

9 Alcohol  Department of Health suggests that you should not exceed the following amounts  Men 3-4 units per day  Women 2-3 units per day  How much is a unit?

10 Alcohol  Research suggests young people aged 11- 18 years are drinking more and more.  Effects of drinking include;  Liver damage  Cancer  Heart Disease  Psychiatric Disorders  Reproductive Problems  Alcohol Dependence

11 Smoking  In the UK, one person dies form a smoking related diseases every four minutes.  Smoking Causes  Lung Cancer  Heart Disease  Bronchitis  Strokes  Stomach Ulcers  Leukaemia

12 You should know..  The difference between fitness and health  How individuals can improve the quality of their life  Distinguish between skill and health related fitness  Explain how becoming fitter can help them cope with the demands life makes upon them  Make an informed decision about your own lifestyle choices.

13 Examination Style Question The choices we make about our lifestyle can have negative effects upon out health and fitness 1)State three lifestyle choices that can have an effect upon our health and fitness. (3 marks) 2) Choose one of the answers given in question1 and discuss how you could help somebody else change their lifestyle. (3 marks)
