Abu Gharib Prison is located 20 miles west of Baghdad, this is where thousands of political prisoners were tortured and executed. A Look Inside Abu Ghraib Prison Kristin Libby Period 7

Abu Ghraib was first built by British contractors in the 1960’s with a total of 24 guard towers. It became a place where Saddam Hussein’s government tortured and abused many Iraqi’s. After Saddam lost power, prisoners were released. Unfortunately in 2001, the American Military began using the prison to abuse Iraqi’s suspects.

Towards the beginning of 2004 reports of rape, sexual assault, sodomy, and homicide were being reported at Abu Gharib prison. These acts were carried out by the United States Army and additional US government agencies. The army often used dogs in order to attack or intimidate the prisoners.

U.S Military Cover Up? In 2004 an investigation was initiated in order to determine whether the accusations of prisoner abuse were true. When the army was asked about the goings on at Abu Ghraib, there was silence. When Sgt. Samuel Provance told ABCNEWS that he felt there was a cover up, he was stripped of his security clearance and was told he may face prosecution.

U.S Military Officers Convicted Nine army reservists were convicted of abusing prisoners at Abu Ghraib. One was former Spc. Jeremy Sivits who was sentenced to one year in prison for taking pictures of naked prisoners. Some of his pictures are what triggered the Abu Ghraib scandal.
