1 Mars Through Time  WELCOME!!  Please sign-in, pick up your nametag and choose a seat.  Using the Post-Its at your table, please write two things you KNOW, or think you know, about Mars, and place it on the “KNOW” chart to the left.  On a separate Post-It, please write two things you WANT TO KNOW about Mars and place it on the “WANT TO KNOW” chart at the front.  Please take a few minutes to complete the pre-assessment you find with your binder. WRITE THE NUMBER ON YOUR BINDER ON YOUR PRE-ASSESSMENT. NAMES ARE NOT NEEDED.

3 Mars Through Time Objectives  Demonstrate how evolving technology advances scientific understanding using the history of Mars exploration as an example.  Model scientific processes using the history of Mars exploration as a framework.  Facilitate group discussions of the nature and process of science.  Model and discuss various instructional strategies.  Provide data-rich inquiry activities appropriate for use in the high school classroom that demonstrate the nature and process of science and fundamental planetary science concepts.  YOUR INPUT IS WELCOMED AND EXPECTED!!

7 Mars in 1965? Imagine you’re a teacher in the spring of 1965. The Mariner 4 spacecraft will be flying by Mars over the summer on July 14. The spacecraft will take the first ever close-up images of Mars. These images have the potential to confirm ideas of life on Mars or completely shatter ideas of Mars.
