Job Description Lawyers have to do many things, not just argue in a court room. They have to know the laws, do lots of research on the case by interviewing the client and putting together evidence and present it to a jury. And it even goes farther than that. There are several reasons I would like to be a lawyer. The first being things in the law industry are very interesting to me. I also love to prove my point and argue but I know that’s not the basis of this job. I also like to read and research which is important for lawyers.

10 Characteristics 1. Values: I value justice and defending what is right. 2. Tasks and responsibilities: The work isn’t the same on an every day basis. You have to communicate with clients, gather information and evidence, present cases to a jury or judge, select jurors/witnesses and study the law. 3. Working with data-people-things: They work with data as in legal data, evidence, and information on the case. They work with people like clients, jurors, defendants and judges. 4.Work Environment: Lawyers are not always working in the same place. They work at offices, law libraries, courtrooms, homes, hospitals, or prisons to work with the client. 5. Working Hours: Working hours and days depend on the case. Minor cases call for much less hours rather than bigger cases. Lawyers can work anywhere from 40 hours to 100 hours a week. Working on weekends is common as well. 6. Aptitudes and abilities: Problem solving, research, writing, reading and conversation skills and being inquisitive. 7. Education and Training: 4 years of undergraduate study (Bachelors Degree) and 3 years of law school is required. You must earn your Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a law school. 8. Salary and Benefits: The median salary for lawyers is $112,760. Benefits are four weeks paid time off (PTO) per year, ten paid holidays per year, comprehensive health, dental and vision plans including domestic partner coverage, life and AD&D insurance. Long term disability insurance and care plan available. 9. Career Outlook: There are many job openings for lawyers and it will still be around in 10-20 years. 10. International career outlook: Moving to a foreign country for this career is not likely at all.

Lifestyle/Lifestyle Goals Again, this career matches my lifestyle goals with the high salary. On the other hand, there is a lot of work to be involved at times. Lawyers work over the weekend often and sometimes even work 100 hour week, which is not a goal of mine.

Location If I wanted to pursue in being a lawyer I could still work in Michigan, but there is the possibility of moving to another state.

Career Cluster This career falls in the Law, Public Safety, Security and Corrections category.
