2 Spanish Colonies Location: Where did they settle? The Spanish colonies were divided into two main regions (viceroyalties) One region consisted of Mexico, Central America, and the Carribbean; it was called New Spain The other region consisted of all of South America; it was called Peru

3 Spanish Colonies Religion: What was the major religion? Were they tolerant of other religions? The Spanish were Catholic They were primarily intolerant of other religions; Spanish missionaries forced Native Americans to convert to Catholicism, and they disliked other European Protestants

In both Virginia and New England there were representative governments, where the colonists elected their own leaders In Virginia, this was called the House of Burgesses In New England, colonists got to elect their own governor
