2 What do we do in English I PreAP/GT? We… analyze works of literary merit write under time constraints research, using MLA standards and formatting improve grammar and vocabulary skills practice AP and SAT test-taking strategies

3 What do we do in English I PreAP/GT? Creative Projects – 1 each six weeks In Class Timed Writing (ICTW) – follows AP Guidelines Vocabulary – from Latin and Greek Roots Literary Terminology – definition and application

4 What textbooks do we use? Elements of Literature (online) Vocabulary from Classical Roots Level C Available for $10.00 in room 1221 Variety of Novels The Translator by Daoud Hari The Odyssey by Homer (in our textbook) The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare (The Shakespeare Made Easy version is recommended.) Once and Future King by T.H. White *There is an independent novel unit during the 6 th Six Weeks. The list of books will be distributed during the 5 th Six Weeks.

5 Do we need to buy the novels? We encourage students to purchase their own novels, so they may mark and take notes in the book. If you would like to purchase these, they are available at the Book Fair in the main commons. The fair is sponsored by the Journalism department. They will be open tonight until 9:00 PM. Novels may also be purchased in the Cougar Den throughout the school year. Vocabulary Workbooks may be purchased from the Journalism department in room 1221.

7 Grades Major tests in English are on EVEN days. Daily grades = 10% (homework, daily work) Minor grades = 30% (timed writes, quizzes, etc.) Major grades = 60% (tests, essays, etc.) Grades can be monitored using the Home Access Center (HAC).

8 When are tutorials? Official tutorials are Monday and Wednesday from 6:30-7:20 Mrs. Orepitan (1008) offers tutorials on Monday and Wednesday beginning at 6:30am. Students do not need to be failing to attend.
