1 Intro to Chemistry: Properties of Matter

2 Physical Properties – properties that can be observed without changing the substance’s composition Phases (or states) of Matter Solid – definite volume and definite shape Liquid – definite volume but no definite shape Gas – no definite volume or shape Extensive properties- a property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample Volume – how much space a substance takes up Mass – How much stuff a substance as Pressure – The amount of force a substance has upon the surface of a container

3 Properties of Matter Intensive Properties – properties that depends on the type of the substance, not how much of it Phases (or states) of Matter Hardness Boiling/melting point Color Odor/Taste Luster – how shiny a substance is Malleability – able to be beaten into sheets Ductility – able to be drawn into wires Density – The mass of a substance divided by its volume or, how much of something is packed into an amount of space

4 Density Which weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead? Density = mass volume Mass - measured in grams Volume - measured in mL or cm 3 mL for liquids/gases cm 3 for solids with regular shapes 1.0 mL = 1.0 cm 3 The density of water at 3°C = 1.0g/mL
