Unit 5: Diffusion & Osmosis Biology!!

1) Grab your binder 2) ****Sit in any DESK!!! 3) Quietly complete your catalyst! 2:001:591:581:571:561:551:541:531:521:511:501:491:481:471:461:451:441:431:421:411:401:391:381:371:361:351:341:331:321:311:301:291:281:271:261:251:241:231:221:211:201:191:181:171:161:151:141:131:121:111:101:091:081:071:061:051:041:031:021:011:000:590:580:570:560:550:540:530:520:510:500:490:480:470:460:450:440:430:420:410:400:390:380:370:360:350:340:330:320:310:300:290:280:270:260:250:240:230:220:210:200:190:180:170:160:150:140:130:120:110:100:090:080:070:060:050:040:030:020:01End2:00 WEEK 20  2/03/15 *Catalyst:* (New stamp policy) What is osmosis? Remember to always turn in your weekly question sheet on Friday –If you did not, do so now!

Learning Intention: We will demonstrate knowledge of how materials move into and out of the cell. Learning Intention: We will demonstrate knowledge of how materials move into and out of the cell. Success Criteria: We will be successful when we can predict the movement of water across a ‘cell’ membrane. Success Criteria: We will be successful when we can predict the movement of water across a ‘cell’ membrane. 1/16/15 2/03/15

Today’s AGENDA! Reminder of classroom expectations & n ew consequence system Announcements Upcoming dates Review LAB!!! Write hypotheses Packet

Classroom expectations: WE ARE GOING TO ROCK!!! Come to class on time & bring materials Do as you are instructed to! Complete all work & stay focused Treat others how you would like to be treated R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

If we do not meet expectations… CONSEQUENCES! 1) Warning 2) Warning 3) Conference 4) Call home 5) Referral *Note: Ms. Schuld may alter these when necessary/appropriate

Announcement 1: Return Books! If you have checked out either: A biology book… A book from the shelf… PLEASE RETURN THEM ASAP! Note: If you are unsure if you have one come check with me!

Announcement 2: Lake Sturgeon Bowl!! South Division took home 1 st place in our division!!! Be sure to congratulate the following students: Kiala CraigAlfredo Fernandez Shamaya FinchisJosh Pacheco Dawt Tha Hlei ParJheriko Smith Kristina

Upcoming dates! Lab activities the next few days QUIZ on Thursday New unit (Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration) beginning on Thursday!

Review Imagine two. doors connected by one door. The door connecting the two rooms is closed and everyone is crammed into one room. One the door opens  What happens? Exactly – People will begin to walk into the other room to spread out. They will spread out throughout the two rooms until there is an even concentration of people throughout. However, people can still move around and mingle! They will just keep readjusting to stay spaced out.

There must first be a Concentration gradient! Difference in concentration of materials across a space Diffusion will continue until there is no concentration gradient - - equilibrium has occurred. How water moves in and out of a cell.

Osmosis = the diffusion of water Water molecules moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration

Thought question Fish cells, like all cells, have semi-permeable membranes. Eventually, the concentration of “stuff” on either side will even out. A fish that lives in salt water will have somewhat salt water inside itself. Put it in the freshwater, and the freshwater will enter the fish through osmosis. This causes its cells to swell, and the fish to die. What will happen to a freshwater fish in saltwater?

Three types solutions 1. Isotonic Concentration of non-water molecules outside the cell is the same as the concentration of non-water molecules inside the cell. (i.e. equal water inside and outside of cell) Water will move in and out of cell at same speed. Cell keeps its shape!

2. Hypotonic High concentration of non-water molecules inside the cell (i.e. less water inside) Low concentration of non-water molecules outside of the cell (i.e. more water outside) Osmosis will cause water to move into the cell Cells will get bigger... and explode!!!

3. Hypertonic High concentration of non-water molecules outside of the cell (i.e. Less water outside) Low concentration of non-water molecules inside the cell (i.e. More water inside) Osmosis will move the water out of the cell Cell will shrink!

Osmosis in Plant cells 1. Turgor Pressure Pressure that builds inside of a cell as the result of osmosis Helps plant cells to keep the plant “standing up.” 2. Plasmolysis Loss of water resulting in a drop in turgor pressure Causes plant cells to wilt

Need Safety Contracts! Olivia Deeontay Ara Devon G.

Lab!!  Directions: 1) Put on lab goggles and get into groups of 3-4 at a lab station 2) Send one person to collect 2 eggs 3) Label the yogurt containers clearly with initials and ALSO with syrup or water 4) Mass each egg (Write original mass in table) 5) Place an egg in each beaker and submerge with vinegar 6) Place systems on back wall!

As a group… Write a hypothesis! One lab sheet: You already wrote down the masses of each egg! Now write a hypothesis for what will happen to the mass of the egg in the syrup and in the water and WHY (“If, then, because).

Work time!!! Work on the packet you received Friday! Use this time wisely & ROCK! Use your notes! Turn this in once you have answered every question, in-depth/ IF you finish early: Begin studying for your quiz on Unit 5 Thursday!

NASA: Urine to drinking water! http://www.goorulearning.org/#resourc e-play&id=4254fa81-3c8e-410a-b34a- eac5947a98a9&pn=resource http://www.goorulearning.org/#resourc e-play&id=4254fa81-3c8e-410a-b34a- eac5947a98a9&pn=resource

Success Criteria What would happen to a cell if it were placed in a hypotonic solution? (You can look back at your notes!) Learning so much… on a Tuesday!
