3  Metaphor-comparing two things without using like or as; something is something else Ex. My mouth is a dry dessert. My grandmother’s dog is an old bag of dirt.

4  Hyperbole-using exaggeration to make a point Ex. This dog weighs a ton. My sister’s brain is the size of a speck of dust. My mouth is so dry I’m coughing up dust.

5 Onomatopoeia- sound word Ex. The clock went tick-tock all during class. The thunder went BOMMM BANGGGG and scared my little sister

6 Alliteration- repetition of beginning sounds Ex. How did Hunter hunt the honey bun down? When will Wally wet Wendell down?

7 Personification –giving human qualities to something not human. Ex. The washer machine started to dance when my mom turned it on. The bed groaned and yelled at my grandfather when he got in the bed.

8 Idiom- a well known expression that does not mean what it says Ex. My sister is all bark and no bite when her classmates pick on her. My brother got a taste of his own medicine when I started to take karate classes.
