Why I chose Mia Hamm I chose Mia because I like soccer. She also likes soccer which means we have something in common. I think Mia is SO AMAZING! She did some things I would never imagine doing. I would like to share facts about her life with my class. 2

MIA HAMM In 1972, Mia was born in Selma, Alabama. Her dad was an Air Force pilot. Her mom was a former ballerina. Their names were Bill and Stephanie. When her dad was in the Air Force she had to travel a lot. She had to travel all over the world! 3

Mia’s Siblings Mia had 2 older sisters and a younger sister. Then her parents adopted 2 boys. One was older than her and the other was younger. Now she had 5 siblings. 4

Mia’s Name Mia’s real name is Mariel Margaret Hamm. Her mom called her Mia after her favorite ballet teacher. Her name was Mia Slavenska. Mia stuck with that name for the rest of her life. 5

Mia’s Foot Disease Mia was born with partial clubfoot which meant she was required to wear casts. When she took the casts off, she never stopped. For almost the rest of her life. She rarely stopped. She really enjoyed running and playing. 6

Making A Superstar Mia was first introduced to soccer in 1973 at Italy. She was about 2 years old and went to the park. There she saw a man kicking a soccer ball with his son. She ran in and kicked the ball. Then he kicked the ball back to her. She then kicked it back, stealing it from the son. They sat there for about 30 minutes kicking it back and forth. 7

LEARNING THE HARD WAY When Mia was 5 or 6 years old, she learned the hard way of why it is important to trap the ball. By getting hit with the ball in the stomach. The ball was coming very fast right at her, instead of trapping it hit her stomach. From that moment on she was always practicing trapping. Even though it wasn’t easy to learn she still had to. 8

PLAYING OTHER SPORTS Mia played a lot of sports before deciding she only wanted to play only soccer. She was the point guard in basketball. She was one of the first girls in Wichita to play Little League Baseball. In the seventh grade, her friends, that were boys, had her try-out for the boys’ football team. With no problems she made the team. She was now a cornerback and wide receiver. Some of the boys disliked her because they had gotten beat by a girl, still she held her own. 9

BECOMING AN ALL-STAR When Mia was 13, in1985, she was named a Texas all-star player in woman’s soccer. Mia could now play in bigger and more challenging tournaments and all-star tournaments. She started meeting other woman who loved soccer as much as her. She started finding out she wasn’t the only one who competed as hard as her. They also got upset when they lose just like her. 10
