8  Test the PWI and determine its accuracy and viability in differentiating different winter precipitation types, including snow, rain, drizzle, and ice pellets. Identify the potential for integrating it with other sensors.  Lead – Scott  Amount - $25k  Deliverable – Draft internal report by September 30, 2016

9  Examine the precipitation spatial and temporal variability across a terminal area (or equivalent area) at the ground.  Lead – Jenny  Amount - $100k  Deliverable – Draft technical report/journal article by September 30, 2016

10  Identify the resolution of the weather information that will be needed in the terminal area to capture variations in surface precipitation type and intensity. Identify and evaluate another region utilizing current capabilities already available in that region.  Lead – Jenny  Amount - $30k  Deliverable – Draft internal report by September 30, 2016

11  Assess the coverage, spatial and temporal scales, real-time availability, and quality of candidate observational datasets (satellite, surface observations, PIREPs, lightning, etc.) capabilities for terminal area icing. Then, address these same items at select primary candidate TAIWIN test sites.  Lead – Scott  Amount - $30k  Deliverable – Draft internal report by June 30, 2016

12  Examine microphysics forecasts and NWP model forecast performance for TAIWIN- relevant fields.  Lead – Jamie  Amount - $100k  Deliverable – Draft internal report by September 30, 2016

13  Examine the value of time-lagged ensembles and model “blending” for the improvement of forecast quality as it relates to TAIWIN- relevant fields aloft and at the surface.  Lead – TBD  Amount - $70k  Deliverables – Draft internal report by September 30, 2016. Code delivery to ESRL by September 30, 2016.

14  Identify shortcomings of model initialization (0-hr forecasts) of clouds and precipitation. Test new ways to assimilate observations from satellite, radar, surface observations, etc.  Lead – TBD  Amount - $75k  Deliverables – Draft internal report by September 30, 2016. Code delivery to ESRL by September 30, 2016.

15  Examine the current state of NWP model aerosol initialization and fluxes as they relate to the development of the drop size distribution and Appendix C and Appendix O. Test ways to improve NWP model aerosol initialization and evolution.  Lead – Greg  Amount - $50k  Deliverables – Draft internal report by September 30, 2016. Code delivery to ESRL by September 30, 2016.

16  Examine NWP model forecast underproduction of clouds at common icing temperatures. Test the ability of sub-grid scale cloud schemes as a way to improve the production of model microphysics output.  Lead – Greg  Amount - $110k  Deliverables – Draft internal report by September 30, 2016. Code delivery to ESRL by September 30, 2016.

17  Test updated radar-based feature extraction software with the incorporation of dual- polarization. Determine the ability of this software to track and predict the precipitation rate and type at the ground.  Lead – Scott/Rita  Amount - $25k  Deliverables – Update software to incorporate Dual- Pol tracking by Dec 31, 2015. Draft internal report by June 30, 2016.

18  Adapt and test radar-based feature extraction software on satellite data. Determine the ability of the software to identify and track icing relevant features aloft.  Lead – Scott/Dave  Amount - $15k  Deliverables – Draft internal report by June 30, 2016.

19  Survey of work being done with icing algorithms by other organizations and the respective maturity levels  Lead – Julie/Dan  Amount - $20k  Deliverables – Draft internal report by March 31, 2016.

20  Review of prior field campaigns and exploration of requirements for a field campaign to address TAIWIN objectives  Lead – Julie/Scott  Amount - $15k  Deliverables – Draft internal report by March 31, 2016.
