Spatial Patterns in Water Quality of the San Francisco Bay Area By Erika Gardner For ENVE 424 Final Project

Bay Area population has been increasing 1 million people every decade for the last 50 years Increases in development and pollutant factors, and non- environmentally responsible storm water management practices have been cited as major contributors to the accumulation of contaminants in the bay Interested in looking at trend in water quality of the bay (hot spots, seasonal, patterns yearly changes, etc..) Possible relationships of pollutant levels with storm water runoff Background and Rational

Data Used Water quality: San Francisco Estuary Institute Regional Monitory Program (www.sfei.org) »27 sites in and around the bay »Seasonal sampling (winter, spring, and summer) 1993-2000 Site Locations: SFEI “Field Sampling Manual for RMP Trace Substances” »Cruise schedules and sites Latitude & Longitude P-drive: Land shapes, major waters, majors roads, and populations (and an attempt at elevation)

Processing Data Excel Manually entered and adjusted coordinates and categorized data (stations, dates, contaminants) Looked for trends of interest (seasonal peaks, location hotspots, etc.) - Analyzed the spatial correlation of data sets: Morans I Prepared csv files for stations & coordinated and stations & contaminant data (seasonal for entire bay) TSS DO PHOSPHATES NITRATES NITRITES January April July 1999, 2000, 1994

Onto ARCGIS 1. Import csv tables within a GeoDatabase 2. Convert files to XY data 3. Join data to locations by StationCode 4. Convert Joined data to shapefile for interpolation Interpolation (Kriging and IDW) Chose IDW interpolate most of the data because it highlighted peak values better Interpolations of TSS, DO, Phosphates, Nitrates, & Nitrites for the 3 sampling seasons of 1999 and TSS comparison over several years

Results Distance weighted correlation: no data set showed any correlation Hot Spots: Seasonally around San Jose & Sunnyvale and Napa & Petaluma Rivers Seasonal Contaminants: Nitrate and DO show some seasonal trends TSS, Phosphates, and Nitrites vary from year to year and seem to have highs in winter and summer with lows in the spring All trends are very variable within each site

Final Recommendations With more time, skills, and…. Look at: Land use areas in the Bay Area Yearly rainfalls for each area/station Water flows within the tributaries of the bay Storm water sources/outfalls Other pollutants/contaminants Area specific events - narrow scope
