3. About the Library The North Bergen Public Library was officially opened on February 25,1936 with 2,630 volumes to serve a population of 40,000 people. On April 1st, Mrs. Rose Cowler was appointed as the librarian.

4. The First 50 Years Timeline In February 25, 1936 the library opened to the public. The library was moved to a new location to the west side of Bergenline Avenue in July 20, 1940. Then July 15, 1949 the library moved to a newer location at 7827 Bergenline Avenue.

5. Continued… December 1956: The Main and the Branch Library’s first inventory was taken. 1964: Docustat coin-operated photocopy machine was installed to enable borrowers to copy personal and library material. September 1969: Spanish language books collection was initiated with 100 titles.

6. Continued… 1975: The card catalog was simplified into 3 sections: author, title, and subject. 1977: The clerical staff purchased the first typewriter to use. 1978: Both reference and children's librarians were hired. 1979: To conduct film programs for children, a 16mm projector and screen purchased.

7. Location The present location of the North Bergen Public library is 8411 Bergenline Avenue.
