4 Standard addressed is: –Ecology - Interactions All organisms, including humans, are part of and depend on one global food web that begins with organisms at the bottom of the energy pyramid. As energy flows through the ecosystem, all organisms must capture the portion of energy available to them and transform it to usable forms.

5 Energy Transfer Where is the most energy available?

6 Energy Transfer At each level of a food chain about 90% of the energy is lost, so the most energy is available at the sun and the least is available at the hamburger.

7 Energy transfer is best shown as a pyramid like the one below. As you go up the pyramid there is less and less energy available. Draw an energy pyramid like this one in your journal and label each level.

8 Producers Consumers Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores Energy Pyramid Plants This is just one food chain energy pyramid. Can you think of others? End of Activity
