Revision Structures & Strategies

Principles Of Play Question Name 3 principle of play you have used when implementing a structure or strategy. Test Your Partner … mark out of 6!

 Width – initial outlet pass, filling the lanes WHY: to draw defenders away from the key/ get ball away from crowded area.  Depth – forwards ahead of the ball near baseline of key and point guard hanging back at the top of key. WHY: to spread defenders and create space to cut to the basket.  Mobility – Quickly changing play, for example if point guard drives in, 1 forward will cover top of key area. WHY: to out manoeuvre opponents  Speed – quick passes (outlet&round the key), quick decision making, speed of dribble, sprint by forwards to get up the court. WHY: to outnumber defenders/create overload in attack.  Space - exploit space, cut to the basket, get the ball away from congested areas WHY: gives you and your team more time to play shot/make decision/  Creativity – use fakes/digusies, come up with new set plays and ideas. WHY: unpredictable, difficult for opponent to read the game, unexpected, difficult to mark/defend, become more of a threat, likely to score more baskets.

Monitoring Progress/ Improving Performance. Question 1. Name two methods you used to gather data on your performance. 2. Name 3 benefit of your training programme. 3. Why is it important to monitor your programme.

1- Match Analysis Sheet 2- Observation Schedule  Look back over you sheet and data, so you are able to describe the sheets and highlight initial strengths/weaknesses. Benefits of Training Programme  More Lay Ups Scored/Successful Baskets  Less Mistakes are made  Structure/Strategy become automatic  Team have a shared mental model: you know each other roles and responsibilities  Enhanced team cohesion Importance of Monitoring Training  Re-evaluate strengths/weaknesses  Allows adjustments to be made or the focus to be change  Provides a record of progress  It s motivational to see your improvements and encourages you to work toward the next goal i.e long term.

Our Training Programme You need to know why we used each drill:  3V0 with all the options  3V1 passive defender  3V1 active defender  3v2 active  3v2 trailing back from half way  3v2+1 trailing back from half way  3V2+1 new option: Javelin Pass Brain Storm with your partner the benefits of using each drill…

3V0 – allowed us to practice all the options of the fast break in an isolated environment. We simply got used to the demands and discovered what options we could choose. 3V1 passive defender – gave us a better idea of the structure as we now had to consider what area to avoid, what space the defender had denied. 3V1 active – allowed us overload in attack and left 2 options open so help us achieve effective decision making. 3V2 active – made play more game specific/realistic, added more pressure, restricted options and forced us to make 1 correct decision. 3V2 tracking back – a more demanding version again creating an environment that is more likely to reflect a real game, as defenders are likely to be rushing back from previous attack. 3V2 +1 – in a game situation overload will not last long therefore this drill helped us perform more quickly as overload time was limited. 3V2+1 & Javelin – creates another option as the fast break can be predictable.

REVISE! REVISE! REVISE!  Don’t forget the fast break and roles and responsibilities of the point guard… there are mind maps on twitter already!  More Mind Maps will go up at the start of next week!
