2 Where it began… Hip-hop is tied to DJ-ing and MC-ing (Rap), and graffiti.  East and West coasts of the US were big contributors.  Born of folk art traditions  Began in the African American New Yorkers block parties in the Bronx  Also in the streets of Brooklyn, New York  West Coast in California

3 When did it begin? 1970’s

4  MC’s and DJ’s began speaking while the music was playing.  This became more rhythmic with the musical beats and eventually led to Rap Music.  Hip Hop DJ Kool Herc began developing “break beats”  Street Dance flourished with the music of artists such as James Brown.

5 Hip Hop originated from Folk Dance?!  Yep!  “Stepping” came from taking a closer look at folk dance steps.  DJ Kool Herc called the dancers at his parties “b-boys”  “Break-dancing” and “Uprocking” were competitive street battles between dancers. The winners were the “masters” of HH  “Locking” and “Popping” were dance moves that came from Cali; these are dance moves that are broken up by short, abrupt pauses.

7 “Love Bug” Starski  DJ/MC  Began referring to his culture as “hip-hop”  He’s generally credited with coining the term.

8 1980’s

9  Hip-Hop took of internationally with the help of MTV.  MTV started featuring music videos that incorporated “Hip-Hop” dance moves.  Battles: dance groups engaged in numerous battles throughout the country.  In spite of competitiveness, East and West coast dancers learned each others styles and took them home to expand.

10 1990’s

11  Hip-Hop dancers around the world were trying to rediscover the roots of hip hop dance.  It continued to evolve internationally.  Several names were turning up as innovators and leaders within the culture.

12 Hip-Hop Today

13 Hip-Hop today  Competition exists across the globe  New styles continue to appear  Recently “clowning” and “krumping” out of LA  Studios offer hip-hop classes just as they would a ballet or jazz class.  Famous HH music artists  Eminem, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, 50 cent, Nelly, etc.

14 Characteristics of HH  Bent knees  Low center  Contractions  Quick movements  Isolations  Locking  Popping  Breaking  Large focus on musicality
