3 Kevin Donovan changed his name into Bambaataa after a trip to Africa. He found inspiration and returned to America determined to turn his gang into a force for good, using the new music to promote peace through the “Universal Zulu nation”. 4 Talking over the songs and scratching records developed while ‘breaking’ had become the dominant style of dance.

5 In the late 1980s the tone of hip-hop became negative and violent with the arrival on the west coast of ‘gansta rap’ which reflects the gang wars over drugs.
