Princeton Signs & notices in public spaces Sue Nichols 2008

At the main intersection are two kiosks plastered with notices. These appear to be mainly for the use of university students as indicated by the content of the notices – seeking and offering employment, advertising social events.

Notices advertising tutoring are a reminder that university students are a community educational resource.

Main street showing location of notice kiosk. Other public texts and communication outlets shown are newspaper stands and sandwich boards advertising shops. Shop windows on this street do not host community notices – perhaps to avoid demands from the large student population to display notices like the ones seen on the kiosk. This contrasts with other field sites, particularly the Australian country towns.

This newsagent displays magazines but customers cannot necessarily simply walk off the street to buy them. Many can only be purchased by advance order.

From the website Music Together Parent Music Together of Princeton: Just a friendly note to thank all those involved in this wonderful music program for children. We have been attending this class for 2 semesters and will continue for many more to come. A special thanks to my daughter's teacher, Miss Linda, who gives every child individual attention which makes each one feel special and inspired. Music Together has made the car rides a pleasure. Like most typical 23 month olds, my daughter, Valerie Lyn loves going places but hates long car rides. We turned to music to sooth and calm her. Before enrolling in Music Together we had few musical options which only appeased her for a short time. Now whether its' a trip to the mall or a visit to the grandparents, Valerie yells from her seat, "Class! Class!"...her request for the Music Together CD. The engraved character of this sign on a building is in keeping with the historic ambience of Princeton. However, the url is definitely now! Note the designation ‘Family Music’ like family literacy. The website for this national company includes a testimonial naming Princeton suggesting this place conveys cachet.

This naturalistic statue signifies a form of literacy associated with educational or intellectual study practices. The figure is reading one book while a pile of books rest beside him. The public location of this figure makes a statement about Princeton as a university town – a town of scholars. The male reading figure is also depicted on a large banner on the public library (below)

A town for scholarly pursuits but where actual students (and their signs) need to be kept in check?

The Witherspoon St area. The African American district within Princeton has a different geo-semiotic character from the town centre.

Community notices were observed on the windows of two shops. One advertising a book sale was also seen on the Princeton Library noticeboard.

Signage at a local playground describes the problematic subject – one who drinks, litters, gambles, lights fires and camps out. Adolescents? Adult males? The homeless? Social groups too large for someone’s living room?

Sign commemorating local black people’s educational history. This year 2008 represents the centenary of the Witherspoon School for Colored Children. This site is across the road from the playground.
