Mixtures and Solutions By Mr. V. Calzada and Mrs. Swanson

Vocabulary mixture solution solubility saturation solute solvent

Vocabulary  A mixture is a combination of two or more substances/ingredients that can be separated with the use of a filter or screen, the physical properties of its ingredients stay the same, and a new substance is not created because atoms don’t join together. The ingredients are not evenly mixed.

Vocabulary  A solution is a combination of two or more substances/ingredients that can not be separated easily, the physical properties of its ingredients change, and a new substance is created because atoms chemically join. The ingredients are evenly mixed. Solute: the substance that dissolves in a solvent. Salt Solvent: the substance that does the dissolving of the solute water

Vocabulary  Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve.

Vocabulary  Saturation is the point at which a substance/solute will no longer dissolve in a solvent.

Mixtures and Solutions Write a paragraph in your composition notebooks that compares and contrasts between mixtures and solutions.

Mixtures & Solutions Topic Sentence Mixtures and solutions compare and contrast in several ways. Mixtures and solutions are the same in two ways. Mixture and solutions are both made of two or more substances. They can be made of a combination of solids, liquids, and solutions. Mixtures and solutions are different from each other. Substances in mixtures do not usually change their physical properties while the substances in solutions do. Those same physical and characteristic properties can be used to separate them like color size, shape, magnetism, density, etc. Substances do not mix evenly such as the powder and water mixture. In a solution, like the salt water solution, they do mix evenly. A big clue that you have a mixture and not a solution is that the substances in a mixture can be separated with a screen or filter. A solution can not be separated that easily. It takes evaporation or a more complicated process to separate a solution. Mixtures are not transparent like the powder/water and the gravel/water mixture. Mixtures do not create new substances. In a solution, atoms join chemically to create a new substance. It is hard to separate them. Mixtures and solutions can be alike yet different.
