Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England, on February 7,1812. His family moved to London, but his father had problems making money to feed his large family.

In 1824 Dickens' father was sent to Prison for debts, along with most of his family.

Charles was twelve years old. He did not go to prison because he was working in a Factory to make money for his family.

The family was free from prison a few months later.

Charles was traumatized by the experience in the factory. He was angry at the social injustice and the misery of poor children.

Charles was sent to school.

Then, when he was fifteen, he worked as a clerk (a secretary) in a lawyer's office, studying Latin at night.

Dickens became a freelance reporter in 1829. In 1834 he started publishing using the pseudonym "Boz." It was the start of his career as a novelist and famous writer.

He wrote A Christmas Carol in 1943.

« A Christmas Carol » changed Christmas in Britain and America.”

Charles Dickens became a celebrity in Great Britain and in the USA.

Oliver Twist and David Copperfield are his two most famous books!

When he died in 1870, he was buried at Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey. It’s an honour reserved for England's most notable literary figures.
