How can we take effective notes? Do Now: What is your current system for taking notes? Do you go back and use your notes to study? Are your notes helpful?

Cornell Notes Organized by date Have topic clearly stated Divided to make review easy Notes Opportunity for review

Questions Main Ideas Notes TOPIC Name: Class:Period: Date: Summary

How can I make my own Cornell Notes? Some classes have strict forms on which the notes should be taken In this class, draw a horizontal line across the top of the paper to cut off the topic and date. Draw a vertical line to split the Questions and Notes.

Why do we put in all the ID Information? Name/Class/Period: Helps to identify notes if they are lost. (You don’t need this if all your notes are in one composition book!) Date: Organizes all the notes in chronological order. Easy reference by students or teacher.

Why should we write the topic every day? Writing the topic focuses the notes If we need to go back for a specific topic, we can just scan the topics until we find what we need.

What do we write in the Questions/Main Idea column? QUESTIONS AND MAIN IDEAS!!! You should write the big ideas of the lesson, as well as any major questions posed by the instructor, or questions you might have. Hint: The top of the past slides have had questions…

What goes in the Notes section? The Notes section should expand on the big ideas from the other column Your Notes should answer every question in the other column The main body of each of these slides could go in the Notes column

Do I need to write every word on the screen? You DO NOT need to copy every single, solitary, unique, word, phrase, comment, anecdote, especially if these words are repetitively redundant over and over. Write what YOU need

How can I use the summary? By the summary, you should be able to answer the topic question. If you are not able to do so, then there was a lack of communication at some point. You need to look at the notes of other, and come in and see me.

How you think that Cornell Notes will make you a more effective note taker? This response should go in the summary section All notes for this class should be taken in Cornell Notes form These notes must be in a composition book If you don’t have a composition book, put it on your holiday list!
