GRANT WRITING PROJECT PARAGRAPHS 1 AND 2 10-31-2013

Goals  Content Goal: Students will begin to develop their ideas and thesis statements for their grant writing individual research papers and will gain insight into expectations through the examples.  Language Goal: Students will further develop their understanding of the separate sections of the paper as well as the parts of the paragraphs.  Social Goal: Students will transition well between different activities and will work well individually.

Example Activity  As we are going through the examples, bracket the various parts of the paragraphs and label each portion/requirement on your paper.

Paragraph #1 - Intro 1. Attention getter that introduces the problem you will be focusing on in the community 2. Brief explanation of the problem 3. Brief explanation of your program/organization (the way that you plan to fix this problem) 4. Con-argument-why thesis statement arguing how your plan/program/organization will fix the problem your group is focusing on

Paragraph #2 – Statement of Problem or Need 1. Start with the generalized problem as it occurs in your community (what is the problem in Champaign-Urbana and in the state/nation as a whole?) 2. Move to the conditions that make this a problem (why is this a problem in our community/state/nation?) 3. Outline current resources that address this problem and identify gaps in those resources (what programs and organizations already exist that are trying to fix the problem? What problems still exist even with these programs and organizations already in place?) 4. Identify how your proposal/organization/program will fill these gaps 5. Research that supports your statements about the problem in the community/state/country

Intro to Research

Outlines  Start to complete an outline of both of your paragraphs on the back of the example sheet and be prepared to start working on these paragraphs tomorrow in the lab
