2 Second Commandment “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain” (Ex 20:7) Forbids lack of respect, demands reverence Towards God, His name, and any holy person, place, or thing

3 Spiritual Health People would have to be spiritually unwell to intentionally break this commandment One who truly loves God would want to honor and respect Him People who are spiritually well respect God Make up for times when people disrespect God Say a prayer when they hear the Lord’s name disrespected

4 God’s Name Moses asked God Yahweh “I AM WHO I AM”
Israelites didn’t use it, out of respect Lord Refers to being itself Shows that God is eternal

5 Violations of the 2nd Commandment
Blasphemy Verbal abuse or scorn towards God, holy people, holy places, or holy things False Oath Oath is making a promise with God as your witness Not necessarily wrong (i.e. court proceedings) A false oath means that you are saying that God would witness to your lie Always wrong Using the Lord’s name in vain (swearing) “I swear to God” OMG

6 What We Should Do Keep promises and vows
Vow: Solemn declaration to do something Wedding vows Vows of religious life Poverty, chastity, obedience

7 Respect Church Holy Objects People Building dedicated to God
Should be have appropriately while there Holy Objects Altar, chalice, paten, etc. Used for Mass, the highest form of worship Crucifixes, religious medals, holy cards, etc. People In a special way, priests and religious have consecrated their entire lives to God
