2 Defining Digital Citizenship  Ribble & Bailey (2007) define “DC” as the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use.  The umbrella term for all things related to using technology. 3 What is Digital Citizenship?

4 Purpose  NYS & National Legislation mandate Internet Safety instruction K-12 (effective September 2009)  2014 National Technology Assessment for Students. Our current 5 th Graders!  District Goal #5: To encourage positive Digital Citizenship (2009-2012 Grand Island Central School District Technology Plan)  To prepare our students for learning, working and living in the 21 st Century

5 Purpose – Teach students how to create positive Digital Footprints

6 What should be taught & when?  Digital Citizenship Skill Graph (handout provided) is a visual representation of the skills taught and when.  Use the skill graph to identify what needs to be taught to your students and then use the wiki for more information & resources related to that skill.

8 Tips  Remember that just because using technology comes easy to students, doesn’t mean they know how to use it responsibly, guidance and modeling will have a profound impact.  Everything we teach & do in schools can be related to or tied back to Digital Citizenship via analogies between the physical & virtual worlds.  Use the Viking Values, Bee Patrol (Sidway) & Character Traits promote Respectful, Responsible & Safe Technology Use.
