 The carved pumpkin smiled at me.  The trees cried out during the storm.  The sun greeted me this morning.  The popcorn leapt out of the bowl.

 The author’s message about life.

The Railway Train by: Emily Dickinson I like to see it lap the miles, And lick the valleys up, And stop to feed itself at tanks; And then, prodigious, step Around a pile of mountains, And, supercilious, peer In shanties, by the sides of roads; And then a quarry pare To fit its sides, and crawl between, Complaining all the while In horrid, hooting stanza; Then chase itself down hill And neigh like Boanerges; Then, punctual as a star, Stop--docile and omnipotent— At its own stable door.

A Dream Deferred -- Langston Hughes What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raising in the sun? Or fester like a sore - And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over - Like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sages Like a heavy load. Or does it explode?

Let the rain kiss you Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops Let the rain sing you a lullaby The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk The rain makes running pools in the gutter The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night And I love the rain. April Rain Song by: Langston Hughes

Spring Pool by: Robert Frost Spring Pools These pools that, though,in forests, still reflect The total sky almost without defect, And like the flowers beside them chill and shiver, Will like the flowers beside them soon be gone, And yet not out by any brook or river, But up by roots to bring dark foliage on. The trees that have it in their pent-up buds To darken nature and be summer woods - Let them think twice before they use their powers To blot out and drink up and sweep away These flowery waters and these watery flowers From snow that melted only yesterday.

Your Turn! You will work with a group to identify words or phrases that are examples of personification. Discuss how personification helps portray the theme of the poem. How does word choice and word association change the reader’s mood or emotion. Highlight the examples of personification.
