Visual Vocabulary Cell Transport

Cell Membrane A protective layer that covers the cell’s surface and acts as a barrier

Semi-permeable Allows some substances to pass through

Diffusion Movement of particles from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.

Osmosis Osmosis is the diffusion of water (red dots) through a semipermeable membrane. Water easily moves through cell membranes by osmosis.

Passive Transport The movement of particles across a cell membrane without the use of energy by the cell

Active Transport A process of transporting particles that requires the cell to use energy

Endocytosis The active-transport process by which a cell surrounds a large particle, such as a large protein, and encloses the particle in a vesicle to bring the particle into the cell. IN

Exocytosis When large particles, such as wastes, leave the cell, the cell uses an active-transport process EXIT
