7-Nov-08ESSC Nov 2008 > CSC Early Upgrades by Fred B. 1 CSC Early Upgrades Current plans for "early upgrades" and maintenance during 2009 and 2010 Description: Plans for mitigation of detected issues. Plans for use of the CMS Electronics Integration Center in building 904 when CMS data taking starts (extremely limited debug possibility at Pt5) Prepared by Fred Borcherding for the CMS CSC group

7-Nov-08ESSC Nov 2008 > CSC Early Upgrades by Fred B. 2 Plans for Mitigation of Detected Issues Work to present detector –Following Slides taken from Greg’s ‘CSC commissioning “To Do” list’ –Hardware –Control and Monitoring –Firmware –CSC TF

7-Nov-08ESSC Nov 2008 > CSC Early Upgrades by Fred B. 3 Hardware High Voltage –Replace all resistors >January – April 2008 Big project – about 10,000 channels Replace resistors that have failed to maintain their specification Will require a ‘few’ technicians for a ‘few’ months Set up ‘production’ area at ISR former clean room area –‘Normal’ inventory of to-be-fixed is small because replacement and repair has quickly followed failure Electronics with problems > What boards have problems? –On-chamber FE Electronics Boards Inventory of to-be-fixed has built up because of very limited access to chambers We have access scheduled by TC as the disks are opened Special planning is underway to optimize and expedite the changes –Off-chamber FE Electronics Boards Inventory of to-be-fixed is small because replacement and repair has quickly followed failure –S1 Electronics Inventory of to-be-fixed is small because replacement and repair has quickly followed failure

7-Nov-08ESSC Nov 2008 > CSC Early Upgrades by Fred B. 4 Control and Monitoring DCS –Move to XMAS monitoring High Priority—does not affect running –Make all HV (ME1/1), LV, and temperature values written to database High Priority—does not affect running –Make database reading work on above values –Move to Web-Based-Monitoring as the “friendly” way to monitor DCS –Establish procedure for bringing a Maraton online. Right now seems to need 1) ID written by RS-232, 2) power-cycling OPFC to re-establish communication with Maraton, 3) values written to Maraton “by hand” –Move to Windows on all machines –Move to PVSS starting as a service Simultaneous move away from VNC as a User Interface Verify Maraton mapping Augment robustness of CANbus communication with Maratons –Computer controlling Maraton is rebooted, causing the CANbus communication to fail. The only method CSC has to get out of this situation is to POWER CYCLE the OPFC’s. This is much too invasive. Add temperature monitoring to cavern CSC racks –Add temperature monitors to water manifold and internal spaces and connect to Rack DCS If-then action matrices Configuration from database –Needs to be tested and “perl script” functions implemented FED software –Exception Handling High Priority —may affect running… to be discussed…

7-Nov-08ESSC Nov 2008 > CSC Early Upgrades by Fred B. 5 Firmware Firmware updates –TMB: ME1/1A readout but not trigger, QPLL “lock-loss” counter –MPC: LCT0/LCT1 correct ordering –ALCT: Force L1A receipt window to be an odd number –DMB: –TF Sector Processor: Reintroduce capability to delay CSC trigger stubs to send to DTTF Firmware loss from PROM’s –Needs to be characterized, as well as implement a short-term (and long-term) fix…  Partially done 4 October 2008

7-Nov-08ESSC Nov 2008 > CSC Early Upgrades by Fred B. 6 CSC TF TF Hardware—power needed Fiber work [DW, GP] –Install new longer DDU-SP link fibers (stored in back of rack) –Re-routing of trigger fibers so that single SPs can be removed more easily –Increase in number of Velcro support points and attention to stress reduction for most loaded fibers in bundles (advice fiber guys) Synchronization of orbit counter (OC0) [DW, LU, GR] Fine delay scan of TTC-rx –Fine tuning of trigger links to be centered in phase CSC TF Firmware Tests and studies—power needed Test of firmware with halo muon trigger delay and CSC stub delay [DW, GP] Systematic accounting of link errors [DW, GP, LU] –Listing, frequency, improvement with cleaning? Improvement with re-sync?, and procedures to mitigate… Possibly caused by implementation of TTCrxFineDelay?  DONE: 21 October 2008. Appears to have been fixed with SP firmware update. 7 7-Nov-08ESSC Nov 2008 > CSC Early Upgrades by Fred B. 7 Plans for use of the CMS Electronics Integration Center in B904 Working Test Stand at B904 Cosmic Test Stand »twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/CMS/CSCCosmicSlice –2 racks occupied, plus computers in #30, & space down front –Chamber, Peripheral crate, FED crate - all installed –Computers & software - installed –TF and TTC crates + electronics + software – all installed –HV and Gas – last part need for full utilization - in process >> HIGH PRIORITY LV Test Stand –Now at ISR –Move to integration row -> 1 rack plus LV resistor cable layout HV Test Stand –Now at ISR –Move date and details TBD (2 racks)

7-Nov-08ESSC Nov 2008 > CSC Early Upgrades by Fred B. 8 Plans for use of the CMS Electronics Integration Center in B904 (2) Storage of spare chambers – early ’09? –Present storage space in ISR will be lost – P5 may not have enough space Build ME4/2 CSC’s – spring/summer ‘09 –Parts kitted in US –Chambers assembled and tested at CERN Require large area > plan for B904? Modify ME1/1 chambers –Modify to remove wire ganging to regain finer segmentation –Work done at same area as 4/2’s?? Work done at Pt5? Surface? Build upgraded electronics for ME1/1 chambers Present on-chamber and off-chamber FE electronics moved to ME4/2 –New version of on-chamber CFEB boards New technology to put more channels on same footprint New readout to send increased data in same time footprint –New version of DMB, DAQ Mother Board, to receive and pass on additional data –New version of TMB, Trigger Mother Board, to receive and pass on additional data –Final pre-installation Board and System testing to be done at B904

7-Nov-08ESSC Nov 2008 > CSC Early Upgrades by Fred B. 9 B904 Lab Have installed a board repair facility in the CSC lab in B904 –Soldering station –Parts … Have board test station –Has been in place Most spare boards and other electronics HW is stored at B904
