BIOTIC Biotic, meaning of or related to life, are living factors. Plants, animals, fungi, protists and bacteria are all biotic or living factors.

ABIOTIC Abiotic, meaning not alive, are nonliving factors that affect living organisms. Environmental factors such habitat (pond, lake, ocean, desert, mountain) or weather such as temperature, cloud cover, rain, snow, hurricanes, etc. are abiotic factors

TYPES OF ORGANISMS TROPHIC LEVELS: A POSITION AN ORGANISMS OCCUPIES IN A FOOD WEB AUTOTROPH (PRODUCER): ORGANISMS THAT MAKE COMPLEX COMPOUNDS USING ENERGY FROM LIGHT (PHOTOSYNTHESIS- CONVERTS CARBON DIOXIDE INTO OXYGEN) PLANTS AND ALGAE HETEROTROPHS (CONSUMERS): ORGANISMS THAT RECEIVE ENERGY BY CONSUMING OTHER ORGANISMS. (ANIMALS, BACTERIA & FUNGUS)

HETEROTROPHS (CONSUMERS) PRIMARY CONSUMER: A HERBIVORE (PLANT EATER) EATS PLANTS SECONDARY CONSUMER: A CARNIVORE (MEAT EATER) EATS HERBIVORE TERITARY CONSUMER: CARNIVORE EATS OTHER CARNIVORES

TROPHIC LEVEL 1 The plants in this image, and the algae and phytoplankton in the lake, are primary producers. They take nutrients from the soil or the water, and manufacture their own food by photosynthesis, using energy from the sun.

TROPHIC LEVEL 2 Rabbits eat plants at the first trophic level, so they are primary consumers.

TROPHIC LEVEL 3 Foxes eat rabbits at the second trophic level, so they are secondary consumers.

TROPHIC LEVEL 4 Golden eagles eat foxes at the third trophic level, so they are tertiary consumers.

TROPHIC LEVEL 5 APEX PREDATORS (QUATERNARY): PREDATORS THAT DO NOT HAVE PREDATORS OF THERE OWN (TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN)

DECOMPOSERS The fungi on this tree feed on dead matter, converting it back to nutrients that primary producers can use.

OMNIVORES Organism that eats both plants and animals.

WHO’S THE PREDATOR? WHAT TROPHIC LEVEL IS THIS?

WHAT TROPHIC LEVEL IS THIS? IS THE DEER AN AUTOTROPH OR HETEROTROPH?

WHAT TYPE OF CONSUMER IS THE GRIZZLY BEAR? WHAT TYPE OF PREDATOR IS IT?
