Core and Peripheral Regions CASE STUDY - GHANA

To learn that development is not equal within a country. To learn the characteristics of core and peripheral regions. To evaluate the core and peripheral regions in Ghana. Lesson Aims

Explaining Core and Peripheral regions Draw a mind map to show: Reasons why a core region develops. Reasons why a peripheral region does not develop. Regions Core Poor transport Remote from markets Periphery 10 minutes

Development in Ghana Ghana is a country in sub-Saharan Africa. Poverty and hunger are problems in Ghana. The Gross National Income is $770 (£509) per person and 45% of the population live on less that $1 (62p) a day.

Development in Ghana Around 55% of the working population work on farms, usually as smallholders or landless labourers. These labourers are among Ghana’s poorest earners and earn so little they usually have no savings. When food is in short supply the price at the market goes up, so it’s perhaps not surprising that 19% of Ghanaian children under 5 are malnourished.

Activity Two 1)Complete your map worksheet. Remember to add the key! 2) Complete worksheet 2

Activity Three 1.Stick the map into your books. 2.Answer the following questions (full sentences!) List the 4 regions of Ghana that have most permanent crop land. Which regions have least crop land? Suggest how this map might help explain regional patterns of poverty and hunger. 20 minutes
