3. Before You Begin Edited 8/20/2008 3 Software The computer you will use should have the following applications installed on the C: drive 1. GPS software: Trimble Pathfinder Office 2. GIS software: ESRI ArcGIS 9.0. 9.1, 9.2, or 9.3 If you cannot find the software on your computer please follow this link for installing ArcGIS software: http://outreach.cast.uark.edu/east/east/gis/start/install/index.html

4. Before You Begin Edited 8/20/2008 4 1.Go to: http://outreach.cast.uark.edu/east/schoolmappingproject/data and find the file for your school. These are self-extracting “zip” files, and have a.exe extension. These self-executing zip files consist of compressed projects and their data. This data will extract to preset locations that will facilitate opening the project file. http://outreach.cast.uark.edu/east/schoolmappingproject/data 2.Right-click on the file and choose “Save target as…”, saving it to a location that you have permission to and will be able to find again. 3.Locate the file you just downloaded and double-click to open it, and click the “Install” button without changing anything else. This will extract the file into the C:/ directory. You may need administrator privileges to do this. Now you can access any of your school data. ArcGIS users: “GeoWorkspaces” and “Warehouses” will be created directly on your C:/ drive. Your data and project files will be extracted into these folders. Download Data

Before You Begin Edited 8/20/2008 5 A good thing to remember… It may take the Administrator of the lab to open and use these data files once they are downloaded and extracted to the individual PC you are using, since they will be on the C:/ drive. Most students only have access to a network drive. The GeoWorkspaces and Warehouse folders can then be moved to a network drive that all students can access once the data is downloaded.

DOQQ – Digital Ortho Quarter Quad Which is an aerial image of landscape taken from a plane, where you will be able to see buildings, roads, trees, streams and lakes. Tiger Census Road file – line segments representing roads. Tiger Census Stream file – line segment representing streams or rivers.

7. Before You Begin Edited 8/20/2008 7 Types of data: You have been given two types of data. Based on the type you will work with is an indication whether or not you can edit or change it. Vector data – points, lines, and area polygons This type of data can be created or modified in your map document. Examples: Tiger road or water data files, GPS data Raster data – aerial photos, images, or pictures This type of data functions as a background for your map and cannot be edited. Examples: DOQQ aerial imagery, LandSat and
