A Virtual Field Trip to UC Berkeley

You have decided to challenge yourselves with difficult classes and additional work in AVID!! While I can tell you about how it will pay off for you in the future, I want to show you instead! You will need to pack for cool weather and lots of walking to explore one of the most beautiful universities in the world! General Tour Information Itinerary Explore the different colleges Talk to students about their learning experiences Join a class and college lecture; become a UC Berkeley student Choose other courses to visit Explore the campus and dorms with UC Berkeley students Learn from students what makes Cal freshman year so unique Discover why your hard work now is so worth it!! UC Berkeley was founded in 1868. It was the first UC campus. Berkeley, California

About UC Berkeley This part of our tour takes you to information about the university and the student body. The University of California was chartered in 1868 and its flagship campus — envisioned as a "City of Learning" — was established at Berkeley, on San Francisco Bay. Today the world's premier public university and a wellspring of innovation, UC Berkeley occupies a 1,232 acre campus with a sylvan 178-acre central core. From this home its academic community makes key contributions to the economic and social well-being of the Bay Area, California, and the nation. Interest Activity: As you peruse the facts about the school, find the following information about Admitted Freshmen for 2014, 1)Average GPA: 2)SAT scores out of 800 Math SAT score: /800 Reading SAT score: /800 Writing SAT score: /800 3) % admitted: Click on the college icon to get to the information.

Freshmen Academic Performance Berkeley is one of the toughest UC’s to get into. Learn here what they look at beyond the basic requirements. Your weighted and unweighted UC grade point average (calculated using 10th and 11th grade UC-approved courses only) Your planned 12th grade courses Your pattern of grades over time The number of college preparatory, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), honors and transferable college courses you have completed Your level of achievement in those courses relative to other UC applicants at your school Your scores on AP or IB exams Your scores on the ACT Assessment Plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test. If you're applying for fall, be sure to complete these tests by December. SAT Subject Tests are no longer required. However, they are recommended for the College of Engineering and College of Chemistry: Math Level 2 and a science test (Biology E/M, Chemistry, or Physics) closely related to your intended major. Include the scores in your application. UC uses the highest scores from a single test administration. ACT Assessment Plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test Click above to get to the information. Along with the info. above there is a holistic review process that looks at other things about you. Click the link to learn about this. Interest Activity: 1) Watch the video. 2) Read the Holistic Review section. 3) Answer: Tell me what they say a virtual hug is. Answer: Explain what criteria 1-6 say. (Look up, or ask me, concepts you do not understand.) Obviously, academics are the most important thing. Look again at the bullets above. Discuss the other things they evaluate. Answer: Why do they care about criteria 1-6?

Thinking Runs Through Berkeley… but so does Fun!! This California institution has become a change-maker— the place where vitamin E was discovered, a lost Scarlatti opera found, the flu virus identified, and the nation's first no-fault divorce law drafted. Scholars at Berkeley have conducted groundbreaking research on urban street gangs and on basic human nutritional requirements, identified why wartime supply ships were failing at sea, invented technologies to build faster and cheaper computer chips, and imaged the infant universe. But, along with all of the stellar academics there is a Berkeley spirit that you experience when you become a CAL Bear. Come experience some of that with me! Interest Activity: Click the Organization Link picture to the right below. When you get to the new page, click on at least five of the Student Organizations in the list and see what they are about. Now select one, and tell me what about it interests you. Name it and describe it. Organization Link

Housing Take a tour of the housing, and decide where you would want to live! When you live in the residence halls, you have a meal plan, Academic Services Centers, security monitor programs, live-in health workers, computing centers, tutoring, advising, in-room data lines, and a community that cares about you and your academic success! Interest Activity: Click on the TWO spots above and watch all videos. Where do you think you would want to live? Why? Be specific to what you saw in the videos. Click the college icon above to get to the information and watch the videos in the upper-right corner. Click here also to see a longer video.

Roommates!!! During your time at Cal, you are likely to learn more about yourself and others than at any other time in your life. Create a menu for a day that looks like the chart on this slide. Create your menu with all of the labels given on the left here, in black and red. Click above for menus. Berkeley is concerned with the physical world as well as the intellectual. Research shows that most freshman suffer from “The Freshman 15”, the 15 pounds that most students gain when they go away to college! The meal options at Cal can help you stay, or become, healthy eaters.

Fees Obviously, a big consideration when you are trying to choose a university is the cost. Come learn about what it will cost you for classes. Interest Activity: ANSWER: Determine how much it will cost you to attend Berkeley per year. The amounts they give you are per SEMESTER. Click the College picture to the right to watch the videos.

Hanging Out in Berkeley One of the things that is the most fun is getting to know your new city and the place where you will spend the next four years of your lives. An alumni of Berkeley suggested the area we are going to now visit. He said he used to eat lunch here and hang out. Come and enjoy Telegraph Avenue. Click on the icon to get there. Interest Activity: Once you get to Telegraph Avenue, go into a few stores, get something to eat, and find a place to hang out by clicking on the links. Tell me where you would eat and where you would shop and why. Where might you want to hang out? ICON
