1 Section 2-3 How does a spring scale work?

2 Force vs. Weight Force Weight The basic unit of force in the metric system is the Newton (N). On Earth, it takes a force of 9.8N to lift a 1-kg mass. Weight is a force. An object’s weight is the measure of the force of gravity on the object. So an object’s weight is measured in N.

3 Spring Scale A spring scale is used to measure weight. Bathroom scales, scales in grocery stores near produce. 1. Attach a mass to the hook 2. The weight stretches the spring 3. Read the number where the pointer ends, this is the object’s weight.
