The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People Stephen R. Covey

Children, children, children, childr... Stephen Covey was a man of many things; a book that sold in millions of copies in more than one language, a brilliant student, and one of them was, you guessed it; children. He was a father of 9 and grandfather or 52. He received the Fatherhood Award from the National Fatherhood Initiative in 2003 (imagine that).

The 7 Habits There are many things you can do to make sure that you’re an effective person, but in Covey’s book, you need only to remember these; be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek first to understand, then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw.

A Little About the Author Steven was born on October 24, 1932, and was an athlete but had to switch to his studies because he got slipped capital femoral epiphysis and graduated early. He then went to earn a bachelors in science from the University of Utah, and MBA at Harvard, and a Doctor of Religious Education from Brigham Young. Bill Clinton invited Covey to counsel him into putting the books principles into his presidency. The Seven Habits is his most renowned book and has sold over 25 million copies worldwide and is known for its character changing ethics since its publication in 1989. In April of 2012, Steven Covey was injured in a bike accident in Rock Canyon Park while wearing his helmet, though his daughter claims it slipped and he hit his head on the pavement while going too fast down a hill and flipping his bike. He suffered from a large bump on his head, cracked ribs, and a partially collapsed lung. He died from complications resulting from the accident on July 16, 2012.

The Book That Has It All This book allows for the reader to learn how to deal with people and stress better by applying the seven simple rules into any situation and allowing for people to get more out of life in a more positive and successful way. Afterwards, it can help with coping with situations and installs ethics in a person to improve not only their effectiveness, but their character as well.

Independence Habits 1.Be Proactive! This means to take responsibility for your choices and the consequences that follow. Don’t blame others and don’t make excuses, lying and cheating your way through life is a poor outlook and only sets you back further.

Independence Habits 2.Begin with the End in Mind -Make sure you know what you want your ideals to be, and what your end goals and relationships you are striving for are. You can make decisions along the way easier if you have the image of what you want at the ready.

Independence Habits 3.Put First Things First -You must manage your own life, by yourself. Take responsibility for yourself and your goals, and play it to the second habit. #2 allows for the mental preparation and this habit is when you manage your life and reach those goals you set and create the end that you strive for.

Interdependence Habits 4.Think Win-Win -Accept that you need to please more than just yourself. Don’t put yourself first, but value relationships enough that you will benefit both people involved. Be genuine about it and respect others.

Interdependence Habits 5.Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood -Listen to people. Not only is this respectful, but it allows them to be more open minded when you need to share and they will listen back. Then, you have created the best possible atmosphere of caring, even friendship, and you can solve conflicts easier this way.

Interdependence Habits 6.Synergize -Basically teamwork. Combined efforts produce the best goals and different strengths let you reach for more than you could ever have achieved alone. One could reach the tallest tree, together, you reach the moon.

Continuous Improvements 7.Sharpen the Saw: The Review Section -Balance your life and renew yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. Exercise, read a good book, help your community, yoga, prayer, anything that gets the thoughts, blood, and faith pumping and helps you feel more prepared to face each and everyday ready to start from the top and begin the most effective lifestyle you’ve ever had. 13 But I’m Too Busy… Why should you take the time out of your ridiculously busy schedule for another book? You have so much homework already. I get it. But I think you should try it. Why? Because it works. Other books have come out to address the idea of “abundance mentality” (enough success and resources to share with everybody) and this is because people learn enough to realize their high self-worth and security. When they put these habits into daily life, they build higher morals and standards, create more respect for those around them, manage time and themselves better, and learn how to take care of themselves and work well with others. It has sold over 25 million in the US, over 15 million in 38 other languages, 1.5 million auto-copies, and is one of the best selling nonfiction business books, even in 2014.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People People who live by these 7 habits, applying them into their daily life decisions and situations have learned how to cope with stress, manage relationships, and become better people overall. The challenge today is: can you become better everyday, with or without this book?
