1 Coordinate Plane

2 Essential Question Describe how to move, or plot points, on a coordinate plane.

3 What is a Coordinate Plane?
You may often hear a coordinate plane called a coordinate grid. By either name, the definition is the same: A coordinate plane is formed when the x-axis meets the y-axis.

4 The X-axis The x-axis runs side to side, or horizontally.
Remember, we studied the x-axis when we created and read bar graphs and line graphs.

5 The Y-axis The y-axis runs up and down, or vertically.
Remember, we studied the y-axis when we created and read bar graphs and line graphs.

6 The Origin The origin is the point where the two axes (x and y) cross each other. The origin is always labeled 0 on the coordinate plane.

7 Moving on a Coordinate Plane
To move on a coordinate grid you need coordinate pairs. A coordinate pair consists of two numbers, such as (4, 1) The first number in the pair tells x-axis movement, and the second number in the pair tells the y-axis movement.

8 Moving on a Coordinate Plane
You will always move across first, then up or down last. What are the coordinates for the fly on this coordinate plane? Right! (4, 3)

9 What are the coordinates?

10 What are the coordinates?

11 Your Turn! Using the provided coordinate grid, practice plotting the following coordinates: A= (3,1) F= (4,0) B= (2,5) G= (6,3) C= (0,6) D= (1,4) E= (5,2)

14 Quadrants We have been working in Quadrant 1 of the coordinate plane.
However, since both x-axis and the y-axis are lines that never end, when they cross 4 Quadrants are formed.

15 X- and Y-Axes Both the x- and y-axes contain positive and negative numbers. The x-axis contains these numbers as shown: Positive numbers are to the right of the origin, and negative numbers are to the left of the origin. -3 -2 -1 1 2 3

16 X- and Y-Axes The y-axis contains both positive and negative numbers as shown. 3 2 1 -1 -2 -3

17 Quadrants When the two axes meet, 4 quadrants are formed.
Quadrant 1: (positive, positive) Quadrant 2: (negative, positive) Quadrant 3: (negative, negative) Quadrant 4: (positive, negative)

18 What are the coordinates?

19 Your Turn Plot the coordinates on the coordinate grid:
A= (4,2) F= (-2,0) B= (-3,3) G= (5,5) C= (-1,-2) H= (-3,-5) D= (2,-1) I= (1,-3) E= (0,4)
