1 DRUG ACT 1976 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
Marketed drug whether produced locally or imported are of required quality New drugs are adequately tested and evaluated for both safety and efficacy before their intended use Term of approval of any product can be modified or the product can be withdrawn from use after marketing, on the basis of additional information

2 Medical practitioners are kept fully informed about the properties of the drugs, i-e., their desired and undesired effects There is also control over advertising to prevent or discourage misuse by medical profession and public It is important to note that medicine and substances concerned with Ayurvedic or Unani system of medicines are exempted from this act. This act regulate import, manufacture, sale, storage and distribution of quality drugs having specific objectives

5 FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MAY ALSO CONSTITUTES FOLLOWING STANDING DRUG COMMITTEES
Drug evaluation committee National formulary committee Advertisement control committee Any other purpose National formulary id a list showing names and strength of all imported and locally manufactured drugs available in markets for use of medical practitioners.

6 DANGEROUS DRUG ACT 1930 ABUSE OF DRUG:
Primary objective to prevent misuse of drugs having potential for abuse ABUSE OF DRUG: If drug is taken a part from its medicinal use, it is important to note when use ends and misuse begins, this is abuse of drug. There is no proper border line for use and abuse of drugs.

7 DRUGS HAVING POTENTIAL FOR MISUSE
Coca Depressants like opiates (heroin, morphine, methadone) Amphetamines Mood altering drugs like Cannabis and Mescaline Such drugs are called dangerous drugs

8 WHO CRITERIA FOR DRUG ADDICTION/ DEPENDENCE
An individual may become compelled to continue taking drugs (craving) Amount needed for the intended initial effect may have to be increased (tolerance) Discontinuation of drugs may leads to complex sequence of symptoms (withdrawal symptoms) Physical and psychological dependence may occur Social deterioration of the personality of the drug user may occur

9 DANGEROUS DRUG RULE 8 Deals with mode of sale and supply of these drugs. A licensed chemist may sell opium alkaloids or coca derivatives to medical practitioner known to him subject to certain conditions The drug may also be supplied to any person having a prescription subject to certain conditions
