1 Color Symbolism Red is a prominent symbol in The Red Badge of Courage. Cherry blossoms represent never changing nature. The crimson field represents blood shed for unification. War itself is represented by the red rage. Finally, the red wound is a badge to Steven for his courage to fight in the war.

2 Definitions Naturalism- Factual or realistic representations; represents war. Realism- An inclination toward literal truth and pragmatism ; represents the fact that the protagonist ran for more. Romanticism- Romantic quality or spirit in thought, expression, or action; represents that the main character needs other men for companionship. Impressionism- The practice of expressing or developing one’s subjective response; represents the emotional aspects of a character’s emotional turmoil.

3 Stephen Crane “The Open Boat” another one of Crane’s famous literary works has proved an enduring classic that speaks to the timeless experience of suffering a close call with death. This alludes to the fear of death in The Red Badge of Courage.

4 Gettysburg Address Lincoln summed up the consequences of the war in ten sentences. The controversies of words and transcription come together in agreement in thought. Lincoln focused on harmony between the early settlers and Native Americans in the early years. He gave light on the fat that liberty and equality were the core components for the emancipation and unity of America.

5 Impressionistic paintings allow you to feel all the senses of the scene, in the same way Stephen Crane allows you to view his book.

6 Lord of the Flies The corpse that the boys stumble upon has the same mystery that the corpse does in The Red Badge of Courage in that both parties have no idea how the body happened to be there or what the story was behind it.

7 Gone With the Wind Gone with the wind focuses on the romantic aspect of the war, while The Red Badge of Courage concentrates on the young mans strive for courageous consciousness.

9 Point of View Omniscient is the perfect description of how Stephen Crane tells the story of “The Red Badge of Courage”. Though third person Crane allows the audience to personally get to know and understand the characters.

10 Humanity Gandhi, MLK, and Lincoln were similar in their character. They all fought for right of the human beings around them. The represented the most altruistic people in history. It seems that without these people we would be a very distraught and wrong society.

11 Proclamation The Proclamation, issued by Abe Lincoln in 1862 highlighted freedom of slaves within any of the states that would not comply with Union control. The proclamation included rebellion and its elimination.

12 Wilmington, NC was an important place in the history of the Civil War.
