3 Pancreas Aids in digestion of carbohydrates, fats, nucleic acids, and proteins

4 Liver Located in the upper right quadrant of the abdominal cavity Important in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, & proteins Filters blood

5 Gallbladder Stores bile between meals Releases bile into the small intestine

6 Small Intestine Connected to the large intestines Completes digestion of the nutrients Absorbs the products of digestion 3 portions – duodenum, jejunum, & ileum

7 Duodenum About 25 cm long and 5 cm in diameter

8 Jejunum and Ileum Jejunum – about 2/5 of total length Ileum – connects to large intestine

9 Movement Through Intestine Peristaltic waves move food slowly – 3 to 10 hours – through the small intestines
