5 What is needed for a sentence to be complete?  A SENTENCE is made up of one or more words that express a complete thought.  A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with punctuation: a period, question mark, or exclamation point.  It must have a SUBJECT and a VERB.

6 What is a Fragment?  A sentence must have two characteristics:  1. It must have a subject and a verb; 2. It must have independence or completeness.  If either of these characteristics are missing from a group of words written as a sentence, the result is an error called a sentence fragment.

7 Let’s look at some examples.  Sylvia feels happy this morning. Because the sun is shining. She is leaving early to take a walk in the woods.  "Because the sun is shining" is a sentence fragment.

8 More examples  Fragment: I couldn't fall asleep. Although I was tired. Correct : Although I was tired, I couldn't fall asleep.  Fragment: I bought a 16-pound turkey. Which wasn't enough food. Correct : I bought a 16-pound turkey, which wasn't enough food.

11 Rambling Run-ons  A run-on is created when two complete sentences (independent clauses) are joined together incorrectly (without proper punctuation) and are written as one sentence.  There are two kinds of run-ons: –Fused sentences –Comma splices

12 What is a Fused Sentence?  A fused sentence is created when two complete sentences are joined together without any punctuation. –Exercising is important it can keep your weight down. –I picked up my laundry then I went home. –She had a sore throat she was running a fever.

13 What is a Comma Splice?  A comma splice is created when two complete sentences are joined together by only a comma. –She started feeling bad on Monday, by Wednesday, she was running a high fever. –I picked up my laundry, then I went home. –His job paid well, however, he still couldn’t make ends meet.

14 Ways to Correct a Run-On 1. Add a period 2. Add a semicolon 3. Add a comma & coordinating conjunction 4. Add a dependent word
