Earth –Moon- Sun

What does Eclipse mean? There are times when the earth, moon, and sun line up Eclipses- when an object passes in front of another object

Eclipse Facts Occur at new moon or full moon phases Does NOT occur at every full or new moon because of the 5 degree difference in the tilt of the paths of the earth and the moon

Parts of a shadow Objects cast shadows Parts of a shadow 1. umbra- area of total shadow 2. penumbra-area of partial shadow

Lunar Eclipse When earth’s shadow prevents sunlight from reaching the moon Usually see a dusky red or copper color because Earth bends sunlight Last about 4 hours

Solar Eclipse Moon blocks light from the sun New moon Lasts about 7 minutes for a total eclipse Very rare Next total solar eclipse will be 2008 in Greenland Next total solar eclipse in U.S. is in 2017 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gs02YQNckE

Effects of the Moon Tides

Pull of the Moon There is a gravitational pull of the moon and sun The moon has a stronger gravitational pull because it is closer to Earth Sun’s tide making effect is about ½ that of the moon

Tides Water is affected the most by the pull of the moon The gravitational pull of the moon causes tides

What is a tide?

Tide- daily rise and fall of the oceans surface Time and height of tides affected by: position of the moon and the sun relative to Earth

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN2RM5wa1ek

Tide facts High tide- tide at highest point Low tide- tide at lowest point 2 high tides and 2 low tides each day

Spring Tide When high tides are higher than normal Sun, moon, and earth are in a straight line 2x a month due (new moon and full moon)

Neap Tide -When high tides are lower than normal -sun, moon, and earth at right angles - 2x a month (first and last quarter)
