1 Figurative Language https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9SeJIgWRPk
Introduction to Figurative Language We will talk about what figurative language is and how it is used. Ask the students if they know any figurative language terms or any examples already. Show the Flocabulary video. Explain to the students that every day when we introduce a new figurative language term there will be a song to go along with that day. As you come in, a song will be playing. From the terms that we know we will be studying, think of how the song playing might be associated with one of those terms. I will ask at the end of the period what we all thought. Introduce the flip book that we will be using during this unit. Every day, after we have given them a new term. Once they find out what that term means, they will write it down in their flip book under the correct term and include an example. An example might be an actual simile or metaphor or it could even be a picture. Anything that helps them remember what the terms really mean. Make the flip books. Put the types of figurative language slide up so that they know what to label each slide as. Teacher will then bring the class back together and discuss where they can find figurative language and where they have seen or heard it before.

2 What is it? Figurative language is the use of words that go beyond their ordinary meanings. Figurative language requires you to use your imagination to figure out the author’s meaning. The water’s reflection was like the sun on the glass.

3 Flip Book

4 Types of Figurative Language
Simile Metaphor Onomatopoeia Personification Hyperbole Alliteration Idioms

5 Where can you find figurative language?

6 Simile A figure of speech comparing two different things using “like” or “as”. What are similes you know?

7 Song Lyric Analysis Listen to the song.
Follow along with the lyric sheet in front of you. Underline any simile that you come across. Talk through with your table as to how this adds to the meaning of the song.

8 Losing him was blue like I'd never known
Missing him was dark grey all alone Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you've never met But loving him was red Loving him was red Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street Faster than the wind Passionate as sin, ending so suddenly Loving him is like trying to change your mind Once you're already flying through the free fall Like the colors in autumn So bright just before they lose it all

In your flip book write the definition. Remember to ALWAYS include an example!

10 Metaphors

11 Metaphor A figure of speech comparing two different things without using words “like” or “as”. Use Katy Perry “Baby you’re a Firework”

12 Listen to the song “Firework”.
How many metaphors can you find? What specific metaphors did you find in the song? Were their any similes? What’s the difference between similes and metaphors? What’s the same between similes and metaphors.

13 Do you ever feel Like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind Wanting to start again
Do you know that there's Still a chance for you 'Cause there's a spark in you You just gotta Do you ever feel Feel so paper-thin Like a house of cards One blow from caving in Ignite the light And let it shine Just own the night Like the Fourth of July Do you ever feel Already buried deep Six feet under Screams but no one seems to hear a thing 'Cause baby, you're a firework Come on show them what you're worth Make them go, "Oh, oh, oh" As you shoot across the sky

15 Idioms What do these mean? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWQNxvOnYZ0
Students pull an idiom out of a hat/bowl and put it into a sentence. They can also draw a picture to explain the idiom. “There’s a frog in my throat!” “That cost me an arm and a leg!”

16 What’s an Idiom? A manner of speaking that is natural to native speakers of a language. Literal meaning and figurative meaning. What are some other Idioms you may use or know?

17 We’re going to play… Idioms Edition!

18 “Curiosity killed the cat”
Literal meaning Figurative meaning

19 How to play… Get into partners at your table.
Pick a slip of paper out of the hat/bowl. One partner draws the literal meaning and the other partner draws the figurative meaning. Once you are done drawing we will put it under the doc cam. The class will then guess on what idiom your drawing represents.

27 Here are some… I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.
She’s so rich she has money to burn. I’ve told you a million times. It was so hot we melted. The books weigh a ton. He jumped so high he reached the sky. My heart broke into a thousand pieces. Make my sundae a mile high. The wait took forever. It was so hot ice cubes melted in the fridge. I was so embarrassed I died a thousand deaths. It was so hot you could fry an egg on the driveway. I studied for days.

32 Activity Use alliteration with your own name!

37 Activity! Personification Super Heroes
The crayons jumped alive like I have never seen before. They began moving and flying around. I noticed that everywhere they would go, they would leave their mark with color. In this boring world, we could definitely use more color and happiness. So I opened the door, let them out and watched them work their magic. They took a sad, boring, and bad neighborhood and turned it into something beautiful!
