1 Community Project - Supervisor Meeting #3 December 17, 2015 Criterion A: Investigation Completed in your Process Journal for today you have A Community in Need: 1. The targeted community stated clearly 2. Lots of notes and statistics about the community based on research (Make sure you have cited you research) 3. At least 2 identifiable “needs” for the community based on your research 4. At least 2-4 sources of information are included

2 Next Steps: Clarifying Community  In your process journal dated December 17, 2015  Write your Topic (Ex. Deforestation)  make a heading titled “My Community” and write “The community I intend to help is/are ” Example: The community I intend to help is a School Community Examples:  Students  Cancer Patients  a nursing home  families

3 Where is the Community?  Based on the community you are choosing to help, where is this community located? Examples:  In your Process Journal write “My community is located_____________ and __________________ make up this community”  Birney Elementary  Rady Children’s Hospital  Balboa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center  Father Joe’s Villages Example: My community is located at Roosevelt Middle School and_____________ make up this community

4 Who makes up the Community?  Based on the community you are choosing to help, who makes up this community? Examples:  Kindergarten students  Child cancer patients  Elderly people  Homeless families Example: My community is located at Roosevelt Middle School and teachers and staff make up this community

5 Clarifying Community Need(s)  List one or more of the “needs” you identified in your Process Journal. (this will come from the information you collected and brought to the meeting today)  Example: 1. I know this community needs to reduce the use of paper Because a forest the size of 20 football fields will be lost due to the production of paper. 2. I know this community needs_________________Because____________

6 Continue Gathering Information  Now that you have identified a need in the community, you will need to become informed. Remember to look for reliable sources, especially if you are using the internet. Don’t forget to plan for interviews, surveys, field-notes, observations in the community or with knowledgeable individuals such as experts, someone working in that profession, or specific students. Anyone involved in the topic or issue related to your project can offer valuable information and insight. NOTE : When reaching out to interview an expert If you do not personally know them make sure to communicate with them ONLY by phone or e-mail. The information can be included in your sources.

7 Process Journal-Due January 28, 2016  In your Process Journal continue to collect information on your communities need  identify who to talk to or work with (experts, students, people with experience, professionals, parents)  collect and record information and data using the most current, relevant, and accurate research tools  design surveys ( example: a survey on how much paper is used by different staff at a school site )  write up interview questions and interview those people who you think can help you  read print and/or electronic information (relevant media)  observe and take field-notes  illustrate/draw/sketch ideas from research and data collection  Before you create a proposal for action, you must be clear about the need that must be addressed and what you can do (action) to address that need
