3 Aims and objectives of this session  AIMS:  To develop a beginner knowledge of hazards faced with driving.  OBJECTIVES:  Complete the tasks set on the blog, and add comments to discussions.  Complete the PowerPoint and answer the questions on the commencing survey.

4 Getting Started  How much do you know about road safety? Do you know which of the items below are required by law?

5 Getting Started  A Seat belt is required by law, at all times when the vehicle is moving.  A Spare Tyre is required by law. Did you know, your car could fail an MOT without a spare tyre that has enough tread on it? The items below are not required by law, however they are highly recommended to be kept within a car, especially on long journeys.  A child seat is required by law for children under the age of 12, unless they are over a certain height.  A High Visibility Triangle is also required by law, to be used in case of an accident. A High Visibility vest, however, is optional.

6 Do you know these road signs? Study these for a moment, how many did you know?

7 Hazards  There are lots of different hazards you will come across when driving. From pre-warned hazards to rare and irregular happenings. As a driver you always have to be on the lookout for anything that could cause a problem or even accident.  Road signs which are shown in a red triangle, usually give a warning of a hazard which you may be approaching or which may occur.  A red triangle which points up usually warns a driver that they may need to more cautious, where as a red triangle with the point down is warning that should follow the instructions.  A high visibility red triangle warns that a car has either broken down or been in an accident further along and so you must be cautious when approaching.

8 Hazards  Hazards and problems could arise at any time when driving, so you should always be weary.  Upon hearing a siren, a driver should always slow down and even pull over if an emergency vehicle is needed to get past.  If you see a car in front with there hazard lights on you should always try and find out why, if there has been an accident you may want to turn your own Hazard lights on to warn others behind you. Click the speakers to hear the sounds.  Road works can appear at any time on roads, you should always follow any instruction there may be for getting past the roadwork's safely, this could entail waiting at traffic lights or even following a convoy.  Always remember when you are driving, not only should you focus upon the road ahead and controlling the vehicle, But you should always be aware of your surroundings and be ready to move or respond quickly to any hazards which may appear.
