Notebook Product Path By: Ashley Osborne and Samson Mataraso

Raise and Extract (Paper) Notebooks begin as trees in a forest. Using harvesters with chainsaws, loggers fell the trees. The log mover carries the logs, rather than dragging them like a skid would, reducing environmental impact. http://www.glatfelter. com/siteimages/timb er_sales/1- 2_timber_harvesting. jpg http://2.bp. blogspot.c om/- IybOVEmf zAg/TwAw kNLsvoI/A AAAAAAA Azw/MMB Uzq1Mgjk/ s1600/def orestation.j pg

Raise and Extract Cont. (Paper) Saw mills cut the wood into more manageable pieces, and saw mills contain computers which minimize waste and maximize production. http://www.lackawacklumber.c om/images/406f18x.jpg

Process (Paper) The logs are transported to the mill where their bark is removed. The logs are cut into boards and the wood left over is converted into wood chips. The wood chips are put into a “pulp digester” where they are broken down into a viscous mixture of wood components. http://eu.magnetrol.com/Images/Applicati ons/PulpChipBins-Silos.jpg http://www.vega.com /Paper_Pulp_digeste r_rdax_200x300_10 0.jpg

Process Cont. (Paper) The viscous mixture is put into a paper making machine where it is spread onto a moving wire screen. As the screen moves the water in the mixture drips away, and what’s leftover becomes matted together forming paper. It is then fed through a series of rollers that press and dry it. http://www.opusalbums.com/files/1803 555/uploaded/iStock_000000520880% 20Paper%20pile.JPG

Raise and Extract (Plastic) Plastic begins as petroleum, which is drilled out of the ground. It then goes through a process called “cracking”, which involves heat. This cracked petroleum is mixed and blended with other materials to form a polymer. It is then melted and cut into pellets. http://www.ngoilgas.com/media/ media-news/news- thumb/091022/oildrill.jpg

Process (Plastic) The plastic is heated and forced continuously through a forming mold made in the desired shape. The plastic cools under air or in water, then it hardens on a conveyor belt. It is then coiled and cut to a desired to length. http://www.buylamination.com/67- 122-large/navy-plastic-binding- coils.jpg

Manufacture It is at this stage in the product life cycle that the plastic coil and paper come together. The manufacturer of the notebook uses machines to punch holes in the paper, and then the plastic coil is threaded through those holes. http://emilyduong.com/ed_wp/wp- content/uploads/2010/12/wireo- incurable_hippie-500x291.jpg

Use The manufacturer ships its notebooks to stores, either by truck, train, or airplane, all of which use gasoline. The notebooks can be used as long as there is blank paper remaining in the notebook. http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/3282783/2/isto ckphoto_3282783-spiral-notebooks.jpg

Dispose (Paper) The paper is recycled. The paper is put into a device called a pulper where it is broken down, then put through a screener, which cleans the paper. To remove ink, it is put through a process called de-inking where it is essentially washed. http://www.sustainablewate rs.com/wp- content/uploads/images/re cycling_bin.jpg http://www.maschinenbau-lohse- gmbh.de/englisch/products/paper_technology/bilder/Entsorgungssyste me.jpg

Dispose Cont. (Paper) It is then refined and re-dried to create clean sheets of paper.

Dispose (Plastic) The plastic begins it’s recycling process by being ground into chips or flaked. It is then washed, dried, melted, and formed into pellets once more, ready to ship to consumers. http://www.recyclereminders.com/img/lg/S/Plastic-Only-Recycling-Sign-Label-S-2979.gif
