2 Why Do Scientists Use This? Scientists use elemental symbols because they think it is easier to write 1 or 2 letters than a whole word.

3 The First Letters Usually, the letters of the elemental symbol are the first letters of the elemental word like carbon (Carbon is the letter C).

4 Good and Bad There are more good elemental symbols than bad or poisonous elemental symbols, like pollution or air.

5 The Capital Letter The first letter of the elemental symbol always starts with a capital letter.

6 The Latin Letter The elemental word potassium starts with a K instead of P, but the K comes from the Latin word kalium.

7 The Numbers In elemental symbols there are not just initials but there are numbers like this( ). The top number is the number of protons in the nucleus and the bottom number is the number of the atomic weight.

8 The Longest Number Yttrium has the longest elemental number out of all elemental numbers. The number is 88.90584.

9 The Three Letters There are only 4 elemental words that have three letters in their abbreviations: UUT, UUP, UUS, and UUO.

10 6 Letters There are only 6 elemental words that have one letter as an abbreviation: like hydrogen (its letter is H).

11 118 There are exactly 118 elemental words in the periodic table.
