1 US History Exploration and Colonization Overview

2 Pequot War First Serious armed conflict between the Native Americans settlers of New England. Numerous previous conflicts over property, damage to Indian fields, hunting and dishonest trade dealings. The Pequot were outgunned, a smallpox epidemic had also weakened the tribe. 1637, the Pequot leader Sassacus is captured, main village destroyed and the Pequot were finished.

3 The Causes of European Exploration Countries needed to find a shipping route from Europe to Asia French wanted to convert the Indians to Catholicism

4 Rise of England as an Exploration power The British Empire made the dominions, colonies, protectorates, mandates, and other territories ruled or administered by the United Kingdom, that had originated with the overseas colonies and trading posts established by England in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

6 Main Characteristics of the New England, Middle and Southern Colonies New England- Wanted to keep their family together and practice their own religion. Middle- Looking to practice their own religion and make money. Southern- Mostly wanted to make money.

7 Bacon’s Rebellion The rebellion began as a argument among English settlers in Virginia over American Indian policy. Later, it turned into a civil war against anti–American- Indian western settlers against Governor William Berkeley and his allies who encouraged more compromised policies toward indigenous peoples.

8 Headright System The Headright System gave each owner of a household the right to fifty acres of land for himself and fifty additional acres for each adult family member of servant.

9 King Philip’s War Colonists fought over land. The war lasted more than a year. King Philip’s War resulted in the destruction of families and communities, Native and colonist alike, throughout New England. It took decades for the colonists to recover from the loss of life

10 House of Burgesses The lower house of the legislature in colonial Virginia. Its first order of business was to set a minimum price for the sale of tobacco. It could make laws, which could be vetoed by the governor or the directors of the Virginia Company.

11 Joint Stock Company A company which has some features of a corporation and some features of a partnership.

12 Mercantilism An economic system to increase a nation's wealth by government regulation of all of the nation's commercial interests.

13 Triangular Trade Trade rou te among three ports or regions. (West Africa, America, Carribean)

14 Navigation Acts English laws made sure that the English colonies were there for the benefit of England

15 Salutary Neglect Salutary neglect was a British policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws, meant to keep the American colonies obedien t to Great Britain.

16 Great Awakening A great revival of religion in the colonies

17 Puritans and Separatists A separatist did not want to be a part of the Church of England

18 Mayflower Compact First governing document of Plymouth Colony
