1 Begin TaskProcessResourcesEvaluationIntroduction Notes for the teacher Elements and the Periodic Table: Nature’s Rosetta Stone. Nezahet Mutlu 2/20/2009

2 In 1869, a Scientist named Dimitry Mendeleyev constructed the first periodic table. He organized the elements according to their families, atomic numbers and many other properties. Today, the periodic table shows 112 elements. Elements are pure substances made of only one kind of atom. Atoms are tiny structures found in all matter. Most substances contain many different atoms. Only elements contain only one kind of atom. ELEMENTS:One kind of atom and pure COMPOUNDS:Two or more kinds of atoms chemically bonded. MIXTURES: Two or more elements or compounds physically together and it is not pure. We will study the periodic table and make one wall-size periodic table showing at least one use for each element. 4 1.We will be studying 84 elements on the periodic table. There will be seven groups you are assigned to; four to a group. 2.Each individual is responsible for making three 5x7 note cards on the elements provided you have 50 mintues. 3.Your periodic table should contain element name, symbol, atomic number, and whole host of scientific data. 4.You will need a black marker and may use any color to represent your elements. Include one place you can find your element in. 5.Review the Periodic Element lecture online, take notes. Then present to class. 6.Afterwards take the group quiz online. 7.Evaluate your group work. 5 Get into your the cooperative groups and assign group leaders. Leader: Student passes out the cards and checks that directions are being understood. Materials manager: student brings all materials to your group. Communicator: This student will collect completed note cards and return them to the teacher as well as ask any questions. Computer Expert: This student will lead the group in completing the online lesson and quiz. Search for elements in text books or online for the necessary information and write it done on the 5x7 note cards. Present individual cards to class. 7 TaskProcessResourcesEvaluationIntroduction Group Evaluation Notes for the teacherBack to Beginning PointsBehaviors 5 Excellent! Your group mastered all the elements. 4 Good job! Your group did a good job of following instruction. 3 Average! Your group may not have followed this assignment all the time, but tried. 2 Needs work! It was a rare occasion when instruction was followed. 1 Needs lots of work! Most of the time did not understand. 0 A Disaster! Students in your group never followed direction. _____

8 Objectives: –Students should have an idea about the 84 elements –Understand physical, chemical, and atomic properties of matter. –Students should be able to identify the element locations, trends, and physical properties. TaskProcessResourcesEvaluationIntroduction Notes for the Teacher Back to Beginning Materials: will need 5x7 note cards, markers, crayons, colored pencils, tape, text books, and computer. Notes: There are no atomic numbers on original periodic table, only atomic weights and the groupings of elements based on their known properties. 30 years later J. J. Thomson suggested that the electronic configuration of atoms might account for the periodicity of the elements, 40 years would pass before atomic numbers were recognized as the basis for ordering the elements. Science standard 5: PO 1. Describe substances based on their physical properties. PO 2. Describe substances based on their chemical properties. PO 3. Predict properties of elements and compounds using trends of the periodic table (e.g., metals, non-metals, bonding – ionic/covalent). PO 4. Separate mixtures of substances based on their physical properties. PO 5. Describe the properties of electric charge and the conservation of electric charge. PO 6. Describe the following features and components of the atom: protons neutrons  electrons mass number and type of particles structure organization

9 Grade level: For sophomores, juniors, and seniors (10-12K) Assessment: Students’ will be assessed by the group quiz's and the student evaluations.
