1 Puritan New England The English build another permanent colony in North America

2 Who were the Puritans? A religious group within England who believed The Church of England had become to close to The Catholic Church. Feared persecution of their Separatist views Just wanted RELIGIOUS freedom!

3 In a compromise The King of England granted the Puritans a charter to the New World. The second English colony is established in North America by the Pilgrims in 1629.

4 A new life that was simple, based on family, faith and God. The Puritans could now practice their religion safety. The Puritans shared a comfortable relationship with the Native Americans.

5 The Great Migration: quickly over 20,000 Puritans arrive to start a new life in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

6 “A City Upon a Hill, 1630 We must be knit together in this work…we must uphold each other in all meekness, gentleness, patience and generosity. We must delight in each other, make others’ conditions our own, rejoice together, mourn together, labor and suffer together. So shall we keep unity of the spirit, in the bond of peace… Ten of us will be able to resist a thousand of our enemies. For we must consider that we in New England shall be as a City upon a Hill, the eyes of all people are on us. Governor John Winthrop

7 Focus Question What is your opinion of The Puritans? Are they good example for others who want to live a simple and wholesome life? Are they the shinning example that John Winthrop writes of in “A City Upon a Hill? Explain your response in a paragraph.

8 Another Side of The Puritans Extreme persecution against those that practiced religion differently such as the Quakers and those believed to practice Witchcraft. Stole land and crops from Native Americans

9 If you decide agreed with their government controlled by only a few religious figures to banishment of death. Can you think of anyone who spoke against the Puritans’ radical views and harsh laws?

10 Roger Williams v. The Puritans Roger Williams was a Puritans preacher who greatly upset the Puritans council. He believed the Puritans needed to pay the Native Americans for their land. Practiced religious toleration. Separation of Church and State Williams is banned from Massachusetts

11 No person within the said colony, at any time hereafter, shall be anywise molested, punished, disquieted, or called in question for any differences in opinion in matters of religion... but that all persons may... enjoy their own judgments and consciences in matters of religious concernments. Williams escapes to form the colony of Rhode Island Rhode Island becomes a true safe haven for those seeking religious freedom.
