1 Earth History Test -Observation and Inference Determine if a given statement is an observation or inference -Calcite, Limestone, Shale, Sandstone - Know how to identify a rock as limestone, shale, or sandstone using acid - Know which type of rock contains calcite and how calcite reacts to acid. -Differential erosion - Know how differential erosion effects the shape of remaining rock - Infer if specific rock layers are harder or softer than surrounding rocks based on the landform left by differential erosion -Sand -What happens to sand or rocks as they move from one place to another. Identify a specific sand as beach or river sand based on the sorting, particle size, and particle shape. 3 Calcite The material in the rock that reacted with the acid was calcite. Calcite is composed of Calcium Carbon and Oxygen.(CaCO 3 ) When acid reacts with calcite, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) gas is given off, hence fizzing. 10/3/08 Correlating RocksLesson #22

4 Limestone Limestone is the name given to rocks containing calcite. If rock fizzes with acid, then it contains calcite and is most likely limestone! 10/3/08 Correlating RocksLesson #22
