How Sedimentary Rocks are Formed
In an area where sand is deposited.
The sand is made of loose particles
The particles are compacted over time.
A matrix is introduced to the sand.
Over time, the particles are cemented together.
A layer of sandstone is formed.
A basin is a low area of land.
Sometimes, a basin can be flooded by high water.
This water can contain particles of silt and clay.
This becomes an area of shallow, slow moving water.
Plants and dead organisms are absorbed into the clay and silt.
Over time, the water evaporates and the clay dries to become shale.
Fish and shell creatures have calcium in their bones and shells.
These organisms die and settle to the sea floor.
Calcium (Ca) from the shells is dissolved into the sea water.
Live fish breathe out carbon dioxide (CO2) into the water.
Calcium (CA) mixes with the carbon dioxide (CO2) to form………………
Calcite settles to the bottom and mixes with sand and clay.
Over time, the weight of the sea water compacts the calcite, clay, and sand.
The sediments eventually compact enough to form solid rock – Limestone.
Sedimentary Rocks. Sediments (notes) Bits of rock and soil which have been broken down from larger rocks. Sediments are “glued” together to form sedimentary.
Earth History Sandstone & Shale Formation. Basin An area of relative low elevation where water and sediments collect.
Sedimentary Rocks Rocks that are formed in flat layers called strata.
Sedimentary Rock Chapter 4 Section 3. Sedimentary Rock Forms when wind or water deposit sediment Sediment – small pieces of material that come from rock.
Earth Science Daily Challenge, 12/11 What are the rocks around here like? Describe some of their characteristics.
3.3 Notes Sedimentary Rocks are Formed from Earlier Rocks.
2.4 Sedimentary Rocks. sedimentary rock – small particles of rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together, forming flat.
Sedimentary Rocks Chapter 4 Section 4. Sedimentary Rocks Sediments are loose materials like rock fragments, mineral grains, and bits of shell. Sediments.
Earth's Surface 3.3 Sedimentary rocks form from earlier rocks.
C. Classify rocks by their process of formation. d. Describe processes that change rocks and the surface of the earth. Sedimentary Rock.
Sedimentary Rocks. From Sediment to Rock. Sediment Sediment Small solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things May include shells bones.
4-3 Sedimentary Rock—usually forms under water notice the layers (stratification)
Chapter 5: Rocks Section 3: Sedimentary Rocks. From Sediment to Rock Sediment – small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things.
Formed from sediments. Sediments - rock fragments, mineral grains, or animal & plant remains.

Sedimentary Rocks Sandstone. What Is A Sedimentary Rock? Formed from sediments (rock fragments, mineral grains, animal & plant remains-shells, bones,
Sedimentary Rocks. What is a sedimentary rock? A sedimentary rock is a rock that is made of sediment (sand, gravel, mud, minerals) that has hardened.
Entry Task: Get your basin and observe your shale. Record your observations. Create a scientific drawing of your basin. Include a profile-view drawing.
S E D I M E N T A R Y R O C K. From Sediment to Rock Sedimentary rock forms from particles deposited by water, wind, and ice. Sediment is small, solid.
Bell Questions 2/3/10 1.Igneous rocks are classified by what 3 things? 2.Igneous rock that has large crystals is extrusive or intrusive? 3.Name two uses.
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS CHAPTER 6. Materials that make up sediments Weathered Rocks Organic Material Mineral Fragments.
Sedimentary Rocks After completing this section, students will identify sedimentary rocks and explain how they are formed (Standard PI – 024)
Quick-write Why do you think some rocks fizzed with acid?
Section 3: Sedimentary Rocks Chapter 5: Rocks. Objectives After completing the lesson, students will be able to... Describe how sedimentary rocks form;
Sedimentary Rocks Notes Sedimentary Rock – when sediments become pressed or cemented together or when sediments precipitate out of a solution. Sediments.
Vocabulary SEDIMENTS Materials that settle out of water or air. FOSSILS The remains or trace of an organism from long ago.
Coulter. Sediment is small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things. Most sedimentary rocks are formed through a series of processes:
Form Group 8Y 16th April Aim of the lesson... How to look at what sedimentary rocks are and name some examples.
Sedimentary Rocks. Rocks that form from an accumulation of sediments from pre-existing rocks and/or organic materials Rocks that form from an accumulation.
Deposits of material left by wind, water, or moving ice.

Sedimentary Rocks. Sedimentary Rock Rock that is formed from parts of other rocks that are compressed and cemented together or as dissolved minerals.
- 75% of the rocks exposed at the surface are sedimentary rocks.
Section 6.3 Sedimentary Rock Please write down the information that is in BLUE.
Bell Ringer What type of rock is formed when you melt a rock (magma or lava) and then cool it? Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic.
Sedimentary Rocks deposition. Origin of Sedimentary Rocks Most common rocks on the earth are igneous. 2 nd common sedimentary.
WEATHERING: - cementation and compaction of weathered material on the earth’s surface creates sedimentary rocks Weathering is the process of breaking.
Most sedimentary rock forms this way Sediment is material that settles out of water or air Sand at the beach Mud in the bottom of a lake Pebbles in.
Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary rocks are classified by the types of sediments that make up the rock.
Sedimentary Rocks Ingle. Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary rocks are formed by layers of – Soil – Sand – Seashells – Remains of dead animals.
Objectives: 1. Identify the kinds of materials that make up sedimentary rocks. 2. Describe three groups of sedimentary rocks 3. Explain how sedimentary.
